Job summary

The purpose of the Assistant Librarian role is to contribute to the delivery of PHEs knowledge and library services in support of all PHE staff, with specific responsibility to contribute to the provision of library services at The Centre for Radiation, Chemical and Environmental Hazards (CRCE), PHE Chilton. CRCE is part of the PHE Health Protection and Medical Directorate and is the focal pointfor independent advice on health risks from exposure to radiation, chemical hazards and environmental change extreme weather events.

Main duties of the job

The Knowledge and Library Services team provide library and knowledge management expertise to support research and development, evidence-based practice, management and business services, with the overall aim of facilitating the translation of knowledge into practice.

The post holder will help provide a range of library services, including document delivery, literature searching, enquiries, acquisitions, information skills training and knowledge management tasks.

The post will provide a unique opportunity for a qualified professional to gain experience in public health librarianship and information science.

Essential

  • A graduate qualification in a KIM related discipline such as knowledge management, records management, library and information studies, information rights, information science or information management, including those which have been accredited by CILIP or ARA, or significant equivalent level of experience of working at a similar level in a library and knowledge services setting

Knowledge and Experience

Essential

  • Do you have experience in a research, academic or NHS library or information service?
  • Do you have knowledge of a wide range of health care resources, including experience in document delivery processes and systems, costs and budgetary management?
  • Do you have experience of using library management systems, including a range of specific activity-based modules
  • Do you have an Understanding of copyright and other legislation relating to libraries
  • Do you have experience of working with a wide range of library users, at all levels

Skills and Capabilities

Essential

  • Do you have skills in information retrieval from relevant sources including bibliographical databases, the internet, e-resources from a variety of platforms?
  • Do you have excellent verbal and written communication skills

Desirable

  • Are you able to deliver user education in using information and evidence resources, including teaching and presentation skills?
