Job summary

The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) is seeking to appoint 2 professional members to the Interim Devices Working Group.

The proposed functions of the Interim Devices Working Group are:

- to advise the MHRA on matters relating to medical devices including signal validation, advice on the safety, performance and quality of medical devices including advice on the steps up to and including moves to remove medical devices from us the UK/GB market. In addition, there should be scope to provide advice on pre-market processes such as clinical investigations.

- to create and maintain oversight of specialist groups.

- and any other matters relating to medical devices.

The working group will review their performance against these 'core' activities on an annual basis.

Main duties of the job

Members should take full account of the evidence in making decisions and recommendations and consider the analysis and interpretation of the evidence prepared by MHRA and experts. Members of the working group should contribute to its discussions and activities.

About us

The Interim Devices Working Group is a working group formed to provide expert advice regarding decisions on the safety, performance, benefits and risks of devices in use in the United Kingdom healthcare system, prior to the launch of the statutory committee under the Medicines and Medical Devices Act 2021.

There will be up to 10 meetings per year; each meeting may last for half a day, usually in the morning and held in London or virtually.

Candidates should have experience and proven knowledge of the world of medical devices and gravitas with external stakeholders and partner organisations within the wider health and social care system. We are looking for candidates with a wide range of clinical and scientific backgrounds and expertise.

Members of the Interim Devices Working Group provide advice direct to the Competent Authority. You would be required to make a declaration on appointment that you will dispose of any current personal interests in the medical devices industry. Please refer to the Code of Practice enclosed for guidance.

  • Experience in nursing/midwifery/professional allied to medicine
  • Experience in a senior role with responsibility for making decisions related to patient safety;
  • Experience of the assessment of benefit and risk.

Qualifications

  • An active member of a royal college, professional society, relevant faculty or equivalent.

Skills

Essential

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills;
  • Ability to analyse complex issues, to think and act, taking in to account the bigger picture, and to exercise sound judgement in the face of conflicting pressures and deadlines;
  • Ability to identify solutions to difficult problems, with an objective, independent and impartial approach;
  • Flexible attitude, ability, and enthusiasm to work as a team member;
  • Ability to establish effective working relationships with a range of external and internal stakeholders at all levels.
