Job summary

To direct, control and monitor the daily operation of ambulance crews, responding to the needs of those who require transport for medical reasons, urgent unscheduled or emergency medical care (999 calls). Ensuring appropriate cover is provided to meet service and statutory obligations. Liaise with the Emergency Services Control Centre to assist in the delivery of emergency responses. As a highly experienced practitioner and member of the ambulance crew, provide primary medical care to patients by the use of paramedical skills in order to prevent further deterioration, promote recovery and prolong life. Collaborate with colleagues across the Government of Jersey.

This role benefits from +19% shift allowance.

Main duties of the job

1. To lead, organise and manage the day to day operations of the ambulance service. Responsible for crews responding to emergency medical calls and providing medical and social transport, ensuring that there is adequate cover for the oncoming shifts and forward planning of rosters. Ensuring resources are deployed effectively and efficiently in accordance with statutory and service level obligations.2. Monitor service workload and liaise with the Emergency Services Control Centre, to ensure staff receive adequate rest breaks and that all calls get dealt with in a timely manner. Ensure all service vehicles available for the shift are ready to respond at all times. Authorise and monitor shift changes, brief crews on daily events, road closures, jobs pending, home births etc. and provide an adequate hand over.3. Assume Duty Officer role on Station out of office hours, resolving any issues that arise. Provide on call cover as Duty Officer as required. Respond to emergency medical enquiries from members of the public, deal with complaints and audit effectiveness of procedures, providing reports to senior managers where appropriate. Investigate incidents of clinical and non-clinical matters with particular regard for risk management issues investigate and provide written reports recommending changes in procedures and policies to senior managers. In the event of a Major Incident, initiate the Major Incident Plan and assume command taking medical control on site as Operational Commander. Initiate a Command and Control System to provide appropriate support and guidance to all health service responders and other agencies. Provide operational command for casualty triage, treatment and transport. Provide information and advice through briefings to the Tactical Commander (Silver Commander). Responsible for the health and safety and welfare of all health staff under their command. Conduct an on-going dynamic risk assessment and management of risk. Act if required in an alternate command/command support role as directed at the scene.

  • - Qualified and State Registered Paramedic with a Degree in Paramedic Science or equivalent qualification.
  • - A recognised qualification in management at NQF level 3 or equivalent.
  • - Have attained or be prepared to attain Operational (Bronze) Command Qualification
  • - Qualified in ambulance emergency response driving or equivalent.

Desirable

  • - Adult teaching certificate.

  • - An up to date knowledge of the how the Ambulance Service works in practice.
  • - Knowledge of legislation, codes of practice and mandatory obligations in relation to Ambulance Service operations.
  • - In depth knowledge of Ambulance Service Command Occupational Standards, at operational command level.
  • - 3 years relevant post qualified experience as an Ambulance Paramedic.
  • - Demonstrate a record of ongoing training and professional development in clinical aspects of the post.
  • - Experience in the use of computers, as well as good keyboard skills.
  • - Familiarity with emergency and non-emergency medical/operational services.
  • - Experienced and up to date in the technical aspects of paramedic practice.
