Job summary
We are looking for a dedicated, experienced and enthusiastic nurse to lead our Interventional Radiology Team. The successful candidate will work with our dedicated IR team in supporting patients undergoing interventional and fluoroscopic procedures, ensuring safe and effective patient care.
The post holder will be involved with the pre-, peri- and post-procedure care of patients undergoing interventional procedures. Roles will include directly monitoring patients, offering support, analgesia and sedation during procedures, and scrubbing whilst assisting the Radiologist.
Although the post is based in Radiology the role will involve collaboration with multiple care teams.
The department is open weekdays from 0830 to 1700, with a limited out of hours emergency service.
Applicants will be expected to be self-motivated and have excellent communication skills and relevant post registration experience. Working in an intense, constantly changing environment the role allows you to use your nursing skills to support patients through minimally invasive procedures, nursing on a one to one basis.
We welcome applications from all areas of nursing although previous experience in interventional radiology, cardiac catheterization or theatre is desirable. Training will be given to successful applicants to ensure that an in-depth knowledge of Interventional and non-interventional procedures is gained.
Main duties of the job
The post holder is responsible for the management of special Radiology examinations on a day to day basis.
They are called upon to work in most areas of the Radiology department and are expected to have a detailed
knowledge of radiation protection and be able to operate some pieces of complex radiological equipment.
They will make decisions regarding issues such as:
1. The competency of radiographers to undertake specialist nursing procedures out of hours if a procedure is
required urgently.
2. The suitability of patients for particular specialist examinations. Where doubt exists seek further information
from referring clinicians and then discuss with the Consultant Radiologist.
3. Whether it is safe to use a cannula to inject large quantities of Radiology contrast using a high pressure
injector in certain cases where the radiographer is experiencing difficulty in placing the device or they are
unsure. The post holder is called upon to confirm the use of the cannula or to replace it.
