Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen within the Emergency Medicine Department at Jersey General Hospital. We are looking to appoint a dynamic-forward thinking consultant in emergency medicine to join the existing team of six consultants.

The candidate will have the opportunity to be the clinical lead and will lead on the development and transformation of emergency medicine in Jersey where patient centred care is at the heart of our services.

The Emergency Department is the only ED in Jersey and in 2021 saw 35669 attendances. The department works closely with the 25 bed Acute Assessment Unit and the Ambulatory Emergency Care Unit. The post holder will participate in the consultant on-call rota for Emergency Medicine.

The position comprises 10 PAs. Applications from candidates who are interested in a fixed term contract or a non-clinical lead position will also be considered.

Main duties of the job

· To lead or supervise the resuscitation and treatment of patients with life threatening injury and illness

· To work in close partnership and liaison with Primary Care, other specialties and other specialist services.

· Assess, review, treat and establish management plans for patients within the resus, majors and minors of the Emergency Department

· To work as the consultant in charge of the department and lead the shift

· Participate on the emergency medicine on-call rota

· To provide clinical advice & support to primary care colleagues and other consultants within Health & Community Services medical model

· To deliver personalised, evidence informed medical care plans to all patients that are appropriately documented and regularly evaluated.

· To provide advice and timely medical reviews and interventions as part of the interdisciplinary model of care.

About us

The Jersey Health and Community Services Department is independent from the U.K. National Health Service and is the political responsibility of the Health and Community Services Ministry, consisting of an elected Minister and two Assistant Ministers who serve as part of the Island’s Government system. A Director General directs the department for Health and Community Services - Caroline Landon. The Group Managing Director for Health and Community Services is Robert Sainsbury. The position of Acting Group Medical Director is Mr Patrick Armstrong.

Funded by the States of Jersey from taxation revenue, the Department of Health and Community Services has a statutory requirement to provide free health care in respect of Hospital Services, Public and Environmental Health for the residents of the island. The island has a resident population of approximately 100,000 which increases to approximately 120,000 in the summer tourist season.

This is a new post to join the existing complement of six consultant within Jersey General Hospital which is the only Emergency Department on island.

Clinical Duties

· To lead or supervise the resuscitation and treatment of patients with life threatening injury and illness

· To work in close partnership and liaison with Primary Care, other specialties and other specialist services.

· Assess, review, treat and establish management plans for patients within the resus, majors and minors of the Emergency Department

· To work as the consultant in charge of the department and lead the shift

· Participate on the emergency medicine on-call rota

· To provide clinical advice & support to primary care colleagues and other consultants within Health & Community Services medical model

· To deliver personalised, evidence informed medical care plans to all patients that are appropriately documented and regularly evaluated.

· To provide advice and timely medical reviews and interventions as part of the interdisciplinary model of care.

· To set-up, participate and attend relevant services’ MDTs where applicable including frequent attendance

· Maintain good quality up to date medical records including timely discharge letters and summaries.

· To ensure appropriate documentation and coding is used to provide consistent audit and monitoring of the service.

· To adhere to local prescribing guidelines

· To provide clinical supervision, advice and guidance to the junior doctor workforce and emergency nurse practitioners

· The post holder is expected to provide cross cover for colleagues during absences.

· The post holder should be adaptable, flexible and innovative in order to meet the ongoing challenges within the service. The responsibilities of the role may change from time to time

· To comply with infection prevention & control requirements including the latest COVID-19 guidance and policies.

Leadership & Management

· Take part in management and audit activities to support the Care Group Leadership team & Public Health in planning for services and ensuring the service meets key performance indications including excellent patient care.

· The post holder will be expected to take part in management and audit activities and represent the service at Hospital meetings, as agreed with colleagues.

· The post holder will be expected to be fully involved in a ‘Risk Management” program and support the Governance agenda.

· Provide clinical leadership and support to the departmental nurse specialists

· Represent the service at Hospital meetings, as agreed with colleagues.

· Build & develop a service of excellence for Emergency Medicine aligned to the Jersey Care Model.

Teaching and Research

The department is recognized for junior doctors from the Wessex deanery and medical students from Southampton and active teaching is encouraged in this role. It is expected that the post holder is participating in the training of Medical staff and that the candidate will ensure that the training and learning needs are identified and facilitated. This includes educational support for the clinical fellows recruited directly to Health & Community Services.

  • Higher Specialty qualification: FRCEM or equivalent European Qualifications for Specialist Registration
  • Inclusion on the GMC Specialist Register/Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) or equivalent in Emergency Medicine (or be within 6 months of obtaining this at the date of the interview - documentary evidence of this must be provided to support your application) or equivalent
  • ALS, ATLS/ETC, APLS/EPLS provider status
