Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen within the Dermatology Department at Jersey General Hospital. We are looking to appoint a dynamic-forward thinking staff grade to join the Dermatology team. You will provide care and education to patients with a range of skin conditions, including skin cancer, the population of Jersey is 108,000.

Main duties of the job

The department works closely with University Hospital Southampton NHS trust and Guy’s and St Thomas’ St Johns Institute of Dermatology which provides excellent opportunities to work with tertiary centres.

The position comprises 10 PAs & there is no on-call commitment.

Continuing development is important and a generous study leave budget can be tailored towards the requirements of the individual, with a purpose built Post Graduate Education Centre equipped to the highest standard.

Full travelling expenses are paid from a UK port of entry, with a generous relocation package available.

The post attracts residential qualifications and Jersey has excellent affordable private education for children. Under Jersey Law, applicants must possess FULL registration with the General Medical Council and hold a license to practice.

1. THE POST

This is an exciting new post within the dermatology service in Jersey as part of the service development and expansion to provide high quality dermatology services to islanders. The post holder will undertake outpatient activity for a wide range of dermatology aspects including inflammatory conditions, skin cancer, surgical and drug monitoring clinics. The post holder will have sessional activity within the minor operations room.

The post holder will have the opportunity to develop skills in confocal microscopy which is being developed within the dermatology department.

The post holder will join the existing team 2 consultants, specialist nurse and nursing team in delivering both inpatient and outpatient dermatology services.

2. DUTIES

Clinical Duties

· To undertake clinical practice within the dermatology for both outpatients and inpatients ensuring that personalised, evidence informed medical care plans are delivered to all patients and that they are appropriately documented and regularly evaluated

· To undertake inpatient reviews for patients requiring dermatology input

· To provide clinical advice & support to primary care colleagues and other consultants within Health & Community Services medical model

· To undertake outpatient clinics in dermatology for new and follow-up patients for a range of dermatology conditions including inflammatory diseases and skin cancer

· To undertake minor operations within dermatology department

· To engage with wider members of the MDT and participate in the dermatology MDT

· To liaise with tertiary referral centres as appropriate to provide patient centred care & service improvements as directed by consultant plans

· To maintain good quality up to date medical records including timely discharge letters and outpatient letters

· To ensure appropriate documentation and coding is used to provide consistent audit and monitoring of the service

· To adhere to local prescribing guidelines

· The post holder should be adaptable, flexible and innovative in order to meet the ongoing challenges within the service. The responsibilities of the role may change from time to time

· To comply with infection prevention & control requirements including the latest COVID-19 guidance and policies

· The post holder will be expected to be fully involved in a ‘Risk Management” program and support the Governance agenda

There are no on-call commitments for this post.

4. DERMATOLOGY SERVICE

The Dermatology Department is self-contained. It is equipped to a high standard and provides a pleasing environment for both patients and staff.

The Dermatology Department provides the following services:

· Cryotherapy

· Phototherapy: PUVA ( including topical hands and feet PUVA therapy) and TLO1 therapy

· Iontophoresis

· Photodynamic therapy

· Patch test service

· Dedicated minor operations theatre

An exciting development within the Dermatology service is the introduction of Confocal Microscopy imaging to support the diagnosis of skin cancers.

MDT Skin Cancer meetings are undertaken weekly, led by Skin Cancer MDT Lead and attended by the Dermatology Nurse Specialist, Pathologist and relevant other specialty consultants. The department liaises closely with Southampton General Hospital in regard to advice and onward referral for treatment of skin cancers as well as with the local oncology department.

Nursing staff and health care assistants support the medical team with outpatient clinics, surgery, phototherapy and topical therapy regimens. There are nurse-run clinics for light therapy, PDT, Iontophoresis, pre and post treatment assessments, wound care and topical treatments.
