Job summary

Health & Community Services is seeking to appoint an enthusiastic and dynamic substantive Consultant in Gastroenterology. The successful applicant will join a team of two Consultant Gastroenterologists, two Staff Grades and a team of specialist nurses to provide a comprehensive service in Gastroenterology. The successful applicant will ideally have a specialist interest.

The successful candidate will have broad experience of inpatient and outpatient gastroenterology and hepatology, fully competent in diagnostic and therapeutic upper and lower gastrointestinal endoscopy, including management of GI bleeding.

The applicant will undertake inpatient specialist reviews where requested and take part in GI-Bleed on-call rota

Main duties of the job

  • Jointly develop a service of excellence for gastroenterology which ensures a seamless integration between Jersey and tertiary centres in England
  • Participate in the development of the gastroenterology strategy for the island of Jersey including endoscopy services
  • To work in close partnership and liaison with Primary Care and other specialist services.
  • To undertake inpatient specialist reviews for gastroenterology
  • To undertake outpatient clinics for both gastroenterology
  • Provide diagnostic and therapeutic upper and lower GI endoscopy
  • To provide clinical advice & support to primary care colleagues and other consultants within Health & Community Services medical model
  • To deliver personalised, evidence informed medical care plans to all patients that are appropriately documented and regularly evaluated.
  • To provide advice and timely medical reviews and interventions as part of the interdisciplinary model of care.
  • To participate and attend relevant services MDTs
  • To liaise with tertiary referral centres as appropriate to provide patient centred care & service improvements
  • Maintain good quality up to date medical records including timely discharge letters and summaries.
  • To ensure appropriate documentation and coding is used to provide consistent audit and monitoring of the service.

Medical/Secretaries/Offices

There are dedicated medical secretaries (2 FTE) supporting the consultants and their team based within the Endoscopy Unit

The consultants have a shared office space with IT facilities.

Leadership & Management

  • Take part in management and audit activities to support the Care Group Leadership team & Public Health in planning for services and ensuring the service meets key performance indications including excellent patient care.
  • The post holder will be expected to take part in management and audit activities and represent the service at Hospital meetings, as agreed with colleagues.
  • The post holder will be expected to be fully involved in a Risk Management programme and support the Governance agenda.
  • Represent the service at Hospital meetings, as agreed with colleagues.

Teaching and Research

The department is recognized for junior doctors from the Wessex deanery and medical students from Southampton and active teaching is encouraged in this role. It is expected that the post holder is participating in the training of Medical staff and that the candidate will ensure that the training and learning needs are identified and facilitated. This includes educational support for the clinical fellows recruited directly to Health & Community Services.

The post holder should deliver training to a range of professionals across the multi disciplinary team in stroke medicine to create a service of excellence for Jersey.

Opportunities for participating in research are supported when appropriate. The Health & Community Services has a policy for professional leave and is supportive of external duties for the good of the wider profession.

The appointee will take part in the GI bleed on-call rota alongside the other two consultant gastroenterologists which will be reflected in the final job plan.

There are currently two Gastroenterology Consultants. Dr David Ng with special interest in bowel cancer screening and IBD, and Dr Moses Duku with special interests in advanced diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy and wireless capsule enteroscopy. They are supported by a nurse endoscopist and IBD nurse specialist, Consultant Radiologist with special interest diagnostic gastroscopy and EUS, two middle grade doctors, three junior training doctors, specialist nurses in alcohol and IBD, dieticians, a clinical investigations unit which performs 24 hours pH, and C13 urea breath tests and a fibroscan service. There is a close working relationship with the GI surgery, radiology (diagnostic and interventional), pathology and oncology departments and we run a weekly GI MDT.

Our endoscopy unit has highly motivated staff and performs a wide range of endoscopic procedures. The unit currently comprises of two endoscopy suites, fully equipped with all the latest Olympus equipment. The overall endoscopic workload is around 5,000 cases per annum, including gastroscopy, colonoscopy, EMR, EUS, stenting, treatment of gastro-oesophageal varices, insertion of feeding gastrostomy tubes, balloon dilatation, APC, wireless capsule enteroscopy and a flexible sigmoidoscopy bowel cancer screening service.

  • Higher Specialty qualification: MRCP or equivalent
  • Full Registration with the General Medical Council (GMC) with a Licence to practise (for overseas candidates it is mandatory that a licence is obtained prior to appointment).
  • Inclusion on the GMC Specialist Register/Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) or equivalent in Gastroenterology (or be within 6 months of obtaining this at the date of the interview - documentary evidence of this must be provided to support your application)
  • ALS trained
