Job summary

We are seeking to appoint a knowledgeable, driven and supportive Consultant in Acute Medicine to join our welcoming and friendly team on the beautiful Isle of Man, where we are aiming to become the best, small island-based health and care system in the world.

Main duties of the job

Nobles Hospital is the Islands only District General Hospital situated on the outskirts of Douglas, the capital of the Isle of Man. It is equipped to the very latest standards with a total complement of 214 beds, and there is also a cottage hospital in the north of the Island, where some Consultant clinical sessions are held and where there is a nurse-led minor injuries unit. The Acute Medical Unit (AMU) is a 20 bedded ward. On average, we admit 10 patients per day into AMU, with around 80% of admissions coming from the Emergency Department and the remainder directly admitted following GP referral. Our three AMU Consultants work a regular rota which ensures that three Consultants are on duty each morning on AMU. Two Consultants undertake a ward round of all patients (each Consultant taking responsibility for one half of the ward), with the third Consultant overseeing the Ambulatory Assessment and Treatment Unit (AATU). In the afternoon, an AMU Consultant is allocated to in-reach to the Emergency Department (ED), to provide support to our medical Specialty Doctor on-call in undertaking medical reviews in ED and providing senior decision-making support to both Medical and ED Doctors. Visits to the hospital are welcomed from interested candidates; please contact Lou Amaral on +44(0)7624 218831 or email Louise.Amaral@nobles.dhss.gov.im.
