The States of Guernsey is looking to appoint an Occupational Therapist with a speciality within Paediatrics to join the Children In Need Team within Children and Family Community Services.

Job description

Job responsibilities

To support the Lead for Childrens Occupational Therapy to deliver a professional and effective Occupational Therapy Service across the Bailiwick of Guernsey.

To contribute to service development and clinical and service audits as requested.

To develop and deliver training courses for staff, parents, teachers, and other professionals as relevant to the service.

To supervision junior Occupational Therapy staff, students, and volunteers.

To manage and co-ordinate a defined caseload of children and young people with complex needs from birth to 18 years.

To be responsible for assessment and the implementation of evidenced based intervention plans.

To set functional goals in collaboration with the young person / parents / carers and multi disciplinary team using standardised outcome measures.

To work as part of a multi-disciplinary sharing information and working together to meet the needs of children and young people and their families. To provide an Occupational Therapy service within the specialist area of Children and Young Peoples practice. This will involve complex needs multi-agency working.

To work as an autonomous practitioner and manage an assigned caseload of work with children 0-18 years old. This will include neurological conditions, Cerebral Palsy, orthopaedic, rheumatology, developmental delays and learning disabilities and life limiting conditions (some conditions will be congenital others acquired often multiple pathology). Children seen will range from mild developmental problems to profound, complex disability.

To be professionally and legally responsible and accountable for all aspects of your own work.

To be responsible for prioritising, organising, and planning own caseload to meet the service and service users priorities.

The post-holder will assess and treat children in the areas of gross and fine motor skills including handwriting and IT advice, personal safety, problem solving, visual perceptual skills, sensory processing, social skills, moving and handling, daily living, and independence skills.

The post-holder will work within the MDT to assess and recommend specialist equipment for 24-hour postural management needs at home and school (e.g., specialist seating, sleep systems, toilet and bathing, mealtimes, hoists and slings, specialist toys, writing aids, safety etc.).

The post-holder will assess and advise on minor and major building adaptations at home and in school liaising with the relevant agencies. The post-holder will assess, recommend, and fit upper limb splints. The post-holder will conduct paediatric standardised assessments and demonstrate a specialist level of analysis and clinical reasoning in their interpretation of the results and implement evidenced based intervention practices.

The post-holder will apply specialist knowledge of the impact of impairment/pathology to achieve maximum function when designing individual treatment plans in all settings relevant to the child (home, school, nursery, short break care, hospital admission etc.).

To provide specialist clinical advice and education to the service users, their families, carers and others associated with any intervention programme by offering verbal/written evidence-based advice and information effectively and to ensure their understanding.

To be responsible for equipment used in carrying out clinical duties and to adhere to department equipment policy, including competence to use equipment and to ensure the safe use of equipment by others.

The post holder will maintain the individuals records and record activity data in accordance with professional and HSSD standards and provide a high standard of specialist Occupational Therapy reports as necessary.

To comply with the Royal College of Occupational Therapy (RCOT) ethics and professional conduct documents and local and national policies and procedures.

EDUCATION AND DEVELOPMENT To maintain high levels of clinical excellence and professional practice by attending in service and external training courses and conferences, personal study, clinical supervision, and reflective practice as evidenced in a continued professional development portfolio.

To actively participate in supervision and appraisal using reflection and analysis to inform your practice and identify training needs as required by the Health Care Professions Council (HCPC). To develop and maintain an agreed area of professional interest and expertise and to act as a resource to other members.
