Oncology Specialist Nurse

Job summary

The States of Guernsey are looking for an Oncology Specialist Nurse to join their team in Bulstrode Oncology Unit as part of Adult Community Services.

The post holder will be competent to safely deliver systemic anti-cancer therapies (SACT) to a complex caseload of cancer patients on the oncology unit in line with agreed local and national standards. The post holder will work independently assessing, planning, delivering and evaluating all aspects of care including assessing and advising on treatment related toxicities. They will act as a role model to support junior staff and students. Competence in cannulation and venepuncture together with a good level of knowledge regarding oncology nursing practice will be expected.

Main duties of the job

Safely deliver systemic anti-cancer therapies (SACT) to a complex caseload ofcancer patients on the oncology unit in line with agreed local and nationalstandards.

Work independently in nurse led pre-assessment clinics, assessing treatmentrelated toxicities in line with guidance and escalating any concerns to thesenior nurse on duty or patients oncologist.

Be responsible for all aspects of individualised patient care including theassessment, planning, delivery and evaluation of care to cancer patientsundergoing SACT treatments.

Be competent in cannulation, phlebotomy and managing central venousaccess devices for example PICCs and Portacaths.

Deliver specialist education to patients, carers and other health professionals and act as a practice supervisor for students.

Communicate clearly with all members of the multidisciplinary cancer team, inorder to ensure optimised patient centred care.

Advise and act as a role model to less experienced nursing staff and studentsand participate in their continual professional development.

Continue to develop and maintain own clinical competency and knowledge oftreatments, and skills in the safe administration of SACT and supportivetreatments.

Where required in the absence of senior staff manage day to day issues andtake appropriate action in a variety of settings and situations

To utilise information and data from a range of sources to identifypatient/client problems and guide decision-making processes.

clients/patients and their significant others, ensuring that health promotion isincorporated in the planning and delivery of specialist care.

To act as a supervisor to staff involved in implementing specialisedprogrammes of care.

To act as a practice supervisor to students and other learners.

To promote an environment that is conducive to quality learning andassessment.

Develop programmes of learning to meet the educational needs of all staffworking within the care setting.

Maintain own continuing professional development needs. The post holdershould hold a diploma and be willing to work towards achieving graduatestatus within specialist field.

Develop and maintain competence in the additional specialist skills related tothe needs of the clients and patients.

To undertake in-house annual mandatory training in Manual Handling, BasicLife Support, Fire Safety and AED training and other courses essential to role including e learning.

LEADERSHIP/MANAGERIAL

To ensure that clear systems of communication are developed between thepost-holder and relevant staff working within and outside the organisation.
