Job summary

The States of Guernsey are looking to appoint a Specialist Speech and Language Therapist to join the Team in Children & Family Community Services.

Main duties of the job

To work within a team of Speech and Language Therapists to provide a multi-agency approach to the identification and support for young people with speech, language and communication needs (SLCN) across the Bailiwick of Guernsey and Alderney

To assess the needs for, develop and implement speech and language therapy treatment to children within the Bailiwick of Guernsey and Alderney presenting with a wide range of speech, language, and communication difficulties including the need for Augmentative and Alternative Communication systems.

To provide advice to others regarding the management and care of children with communication difficulties.

To provide a service working closely with parents/carers; pre-schools, school age and other relevant professionals.

To provide training to staff as relevant to the post e.g. specific in-service training across the setting to a variety of audiences (parents, colleagues, school settings).

To provide agreed supervision and peer review support to less experienced colleagues and students, including second opinions when necessary.

To be accountable for own professional actions and recognise professional boundaries, seeking advice from senior colleagues as appropriate.

Job description

Job responsibilities

To be recognised as a developing specialist in the field of social communication inclusive of AAC.

To manage and prioritise own caseload independently, demonstrating skills in dealing with complex issues to generate appropriate strategies for caseload management.

To undertake a range of specialist speech and language therapy assessment and therapy techniques to contribute to differential diagnostic process, formulating hypothesis based on evidence from assessment and acquired knowledge to arrive at a clinical diagnosis.

To employ highly developed listening, concentration, and observation skills to simultaneously monitor all non-verbal and verbal aspects of a childs communication in assessment, diagnosis, and treatment, taking a proactive role throughout.

Lead and support SLT colleagues in the co-ordination, development and delivery of training programmes and information packages for parents/carer and colleagues who work with Health, Social Care and Education.

To write, and support others to write reports and care plans regarding patient care and the speech and language therapy advice for Formal Assessment Reporting and My Education Plans.

To support the monitoring and effective use of clinical and team resources and propose changes where clinical effectiveness and efficiency could be improved.

To establish, monitor and review measurable outcomes for clinical interventions using the Care Aims model and Therapy Outcome Measures.

To actively promote and support new ways of working within the field of practice, for example, supporting the implementation of The Balanced System model and transition of care between universal, targeted and specialist levels of input.

To maintain sensitivity at all times and on a day-to-day basis to the emotional needs of children and their parents / carers, in particular when communicating distressing information regarding the nature of the childs difficulties and future

To communicate complex information regarding disorders/conditions/methods of support and management to carers and other professionals in a clear and effective manner

To adapt in response to changing needs and circumstances of clients and carers, to show empathy and sensitivity with regards to social situations, difficult family circumstances and understanding of condition, taking into consideration cultural, linguistic, social, and psychological aspects.

To identify and participate in clinical audit and research that will improve the service.

To work collaboratively with other disciplines to identify multi-agency audit and research as appropriate.

Identify personal/professional development evidenced by the CARE Values framework whilst maintaining CPD in line with the RCSLT guidelines.

To maintain up to date HCPC and RCSLT membership and adhere to their professional and clinical guidelines.

Attend relevant course, meeting and clinical excellence networks and advanced training for clinical area of specialism which may include occasional travel off island.

Develop skills in curriculum planning and delivery to education and early years staff, demonstrating knowledge about curriculum differentiation for pre-school and school age clients.
