Job summary

We are looking to appoint one Consultant in Anaesthesia and Intensive Care to help provide anaesthetic and intensive care services to the population of Guernsey (approx. 65,500). You will become part of a team of 12 WTE consultants in the anaesthetic directorate. Princess Elizabeth Hospital is in the building stage of a 2-phase modernisation process involving many parts of the hospital. This includes an expansion of ICU from 7 to 12 beds in a new Intensive Care Unit. Phase 2 has a planned Main Theatres expansion from the existing 4 to 8 operating theatres, Maternity Unit, ward, A and E and Outpatient developments.

In addition, a new Day Patient facility will be built. Building work on the Intensive Care Unit is in advanced stages (phase 1) with estimated completion early 2024. You would join our team of 3 existing intensivists. We have a team of locally trained Advanced Critical Care Practitioners who operate under the consultant model as ICU residents. The job would be split between ICU sessions and theatre. All members of the department participate on the on-call rota covering ICU out of hours. The ICU consistently performed extremely well in benchmarking against other comparable units for more than 20 years.

About us

The Medical Specialist Group (MSG) Limited Liability Partnership is contracted to provide a wide range of emergency and elective medical services for the Bailiwick of Guernsey, in partnership with the Health and Social Services Committee (HSC) of the States of Guernsey. It aims to serve and care for the community through the provision of the highest standard of clinical care. The service is currently provided by 54 consultants with a range of professional interests. Medical indemnity is provided by MDDUS through the MSG.

The Medical Specialist Group is based at Alexandra House and Mill House where most managerial, and other support staff are based. Both buildings have dedicated outpatient facilities and are situated approximately 400 metres from the Island's main hospital, the Princess Elizabeth Hospital (PEH).
