Main duties of the job

The role will entail providing administrative and clinical support for the provision of dental care in Defence Primary Health Care, Dental Centres (DC) to enhance force generation and operational capability and minimise dental morbidity on operations. This is to include maintenance of clinical sessions, on average at least 1 session per week, prioritised and directed from the Senior Dental Officer (SDO)/Regional Headquarters (HQ) chain of command as required. The timings for such sessions will depend on local staffing levels (effected by staff absence/local detachment/illness etc) to provide Dental Nurse (DN) cover. Civilian Dental Practice Manager (CDPM) will, when in surgery be required to delegate some management tasks to Agenda for Change Band 4 Dental Nurse(s) as is normal in a dental centre.

The role may also include travelling to dental centres within the region other than their normal place of work either in a clinical or administrative capacity as required.

Job responsibilities

Duties of the role include but are not limited to:

  • Undertaking CPD in the core subjects of medical emergencies, Infection Prevention control (IPC), disinfection and decontamination, radiography and radiation protection, legal and ethical issues and handling complaints, as recommended by the GDC.
  • Managing and supervising referrals to Specialist Practitioners and Secondary Care facilities, liaising with patients to ensure appointments are attended and documentation is returned to the Dental Centre on completion of treatment.
  • Ensuring systems are in place to allow patients to claim approved costs associated with the provision of dental care and work with the unit admin staff to ensure these costs are correctly audited, informing the Regional Headquarters of all expenditure.
  • Managing dental records (electronic and manual). Ensuring the correct receipt, dispatch, registration and storage of health records hastening any outstanding documentation as required.
