We are seeking to recruit a dynamic, organised and hardworking Band 5 Practice Nurse to join our multi disciplined vibrant and fast paced organisation working across at Hamworthy Barracks.

This is a Fixed-term Appointment as a Band 5 Practice Nurse in the Defence Primary Healthcare. Your responsibilities will be as described in this job advert. The reason why you are appointed for a fixed period is due to covering for a gapped Military post. This post will therefore begin on your appointment and will end on 3rd August 2025.

The Practice Nurse will work as part of a multi-disciplinary primary healthcare team delivering general medical services and elements of occupational health to military personnel.

The Practice Nurse is responsible for the delivery of appropriate assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of care needs, medical screening and advice to patients within their professional competence.

Main duties of the job

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Assessing the needs of patients against a recognised model of care, implement and evaluate care ensuring patients receive care according to practice guidelines and delegate care accordingly; this includes prioritising treatment and care.
  • Advising patients, on the promotion of health and prevention of illness.
  • Delivering health promotion health promotion clinics i.e. smoking cessation, weight management, alcohol misuse, sexual health and flu campaign.
  • Act as a mentor to students, nurses, training primary healthcare nurses and military medics.

The successful Practice Nurse will work unsupervised, and is responsible for the delivery of appropriate assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of care needs, medical screening and advice to patients within their professional competence and be prepared to supervise and support junior members of the team.

You should be aware that when your Fixed-term Appointment at MOD comes to an end, arrangements will be made in line with the FTA policy.

If you are a permanent MoD civil servant and are found successful for an advertised Fixed-term Appointment (FTA) you should move into the post under a Temporary Transfer (for up to a maximum of 3 years). At the end of the posting you will return to your previous MoD Business area. If this posting is at a higher grade, your promotion will be temporary, and you will return to your substantive grade at the end of the Temporary Transfer.
