Job summary

Here at Defence Medical Rehabilitation Centre (DMRC) Stanford Hall, we are an inclusive and dedicated organisation working to provide high quality rehabilitation to injured service personnel.

We are looking for a Recreational Therapist to complete our large multidisciplinary Complex Trauma team. The role is to support our patients to engage with recreational and leisure activities. This facilitates the regaining of functional skills through social and recreational activities, in order to improve the patients overall quality of life. Our patients have a wide range of injuries including fractures, amputation and spinal cord injury but you may also provide support to other teams including those treating neurological illness or injury.

This role is a 37.5 hour per week.

Main duties of the job

The Recreational Therapists role is to be responsible to support the provision of rehabilitation to service personnel with complex clinical needs across DMRC.

  • The post holder will work autonomously without direct supervision but under the guidance of a registered Occupational Therapist.
  • Be accountable for your delegated clinical caseload of patients who will have a wide range of needs
  • Organise and deliver a wide range of activities with groups and individuals
  • Have effective communication with patients and colleagues demonstrating the ability to negotiate, reassure and motivate
  • Provide support to the Occupational Therapists and other team members in the delivery and development of a quality service.

Duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Planning and organising recreational therapy activities for patients in small groups and/ or individual basis.
  • Ensuring patients are centred in recreational activities which are incorporated into the formal timetable of patient's treatment programme.
  • To liaise with the referring Occupational Therapist within the team to highlight the progress attained in therapy sessions.
  • Supporting other members of the interdisciplinary team as required dependent on case load constraints and allowances.
  • Arranging and leading recreational activities for patients, being responsible for ensuring appropriate behaviour.
  • Maintaining good relationships with the team, patients, carers and personnel from other Ministry of Defence (MOD) and external agencies.
