Job summary

The primary aim of the Database Administrator role is to provide management and support of database environments and associated technologies such as Integrated Services, Reporting Services and Analysis Services on a number of systems.

Main duties of the job

An experienced Database Administrator looking to develop with a desire to work within the NHS, ensuring value for public money and helping to improve outcomes for internal and external stakeholders efficient RDBMS management.

About us

The post holder will support the IT Services DBA Lead - Database Operations by providing professional expertise which ensures work packages and business as usual tasks are delivered effectively. They will also take the lead in planning and managing their successful delivery. This is a SQL Server DBA role largely responsible for providing operational database services to the organisation. Some of the primary responsibilities of this role would include owning, tracking and resolving database related incidents and requests, fulfilling requests and resolving incidents within SLAs, reviewing service related reports (e.g. database backups, maintenance, monitoring) on a daily basis to ensure service related issues are identified and resolved within established SLAs, responding to database related alerts and escalations and working with database engineering to come up with strategic solutions to recurring problems.

This SQL Server DBA role requires a service-oriented mentality, high sense of ownership of the problems and requests assigned, focus on managing and resolving issues in alignment with the SLAs, establishing and maintaining communication with technology customers to keep them updated with status of their requests, initiating and performing changes on non-production and production systems and proactively escalating any issues that cannot be resolved within the established timeframes.

  • Working with complex data, facts and situations requiring analysis, interpretations and comparisons in order to provide a range of options and recommend decisions.
  • Ensuring the IT Database infrastructure continues to meet the needs of the business.
  • Ensuring the performance of databases and services in terms of their contribution to business performance and their sustainability
  • Uses database management system software and tools to collect performance statistics and create reports.
  • Carries out routine configuration/installation and reconfiguration of database and related products using defined operational procedures.
  • Following and refining procedures that contribute to the day to day management of the SQL Server infrastructure within SWCS IT Services including:
    • Checking backups and consistency checks are made
    • Maintaining the security, access control and connectivity to the database environment
    • Assisting with the loading and processing of data
    • Reporting on the storage capacity of database servers

  • Ability to detect and troubleshoot SQL Server related CPU, memory, I/O, disk space and other resource contention.
  • Strong knowledge of backups, restores, recovery models, database shrink operations, DBCC commands, Clustering, Database mirroring, Replication.
  • Expert experience in implementing operational automation.

  • Strong knowledge of how indexes, index management, integrity checks, configuration, patching. How statistics work, how indexes are stored, how they can be created and managed effectively.
  • SQL Development - ability to write and troubleshoot SQL Code and design (Stored procs, functions, tables, views, triggers, indexes, constraints)
