Job summary

We are looking to recruit to a newSenior Data Scientistrole who has experience of NHS analytics with a strong commitment to using open-source solutions and reproducible analytical pipelines. We recognise that there is a skills gap to help analysts move in this direction and so the focus of this post is to lead, design, deliver and co-ordinate delivery of RAP and related training to internal and external stakeholders, via theMidlands Decision Support Network (MDSN)and theNHS-R Community.

The band offered will be dependent on experience.

Main duties of the job

Analytics in the NHS is on a transformational path, one that is well described within the Ben Goldacre review"Better, Broader, Safer: Using Health Data for Research and Analysis".The Strategy Unit is committed to staying at the forefront of NHS analytics and to ensure this we recognise the need to continue to develop and expand the skillset of our analytical teams.

There will also be opportunities for the post holder to contribute to data science and application development projects.

The post holder will be provided with all the opportunities you require to develop your skills and build your career, both through formal training and hands-on experience.

Job description

Job responsibilities

  • The post holder will be line managed byRachel Caswell(MDSN Training Coordinator) and work closely withProfessor Mohammed A Mohammed(who is the overall lead for Training and the NHS-R Community).
  • Advocate for open-source solutions where appropriate and to provide advice and practical support to internal and external stakeholders in moving forward with open-source solutions and reproducible analytical pipelines.
  • Contribute to policy and practice in the NHS-R Community and nationally, especially in data science training and competencies.
  • To design, deliver and commission analytics related training programs for the MDSN which will include open-source solutions and reproducible analytical pipelines.
  • To engage with the MDSN community and the NHS-R Community and support networking and related activities including hosting webinars, talks and discussion groups.
  • To determine the training needs of analysts relating to open source and reproducible analytical pipelines other data science issues and develop a coordinated offer that addresses these needs, perhaps via an annual survey and on-going engagement with analysts in the MDSN, NHS-R and other networks.
  • Provision of ad hoc training, advice and support to SU colleagues and MDSN members as well as other SU clients.
  • Assist with leadership for NHS-R Community setting its strategic direction, enhancing its profile nationally and driving its development and growth
  • Provide operational support to the NHS-R Community by being active on slack, twitter and other platforms
  • To assist the leadership of the delivery of key NHS-R events including the annual NHSR conference, annual hack days, regular workshops or discussion forums and the NHS-R website.
  • There will be some opportunity to undertake and support data science projects where appropriate
  • To keep up to date with new developments in data science and develop ideas about the how to support the health services through innovative analyses or application development.
  • In future it is likely that some line management responsibility may be required
