Job summary

We are seeking to appoint a Service Group Director who has a proven track record of successful transformational leadership and service improvement in a complex healthcare setting, with a background in operational, clinical or financial management. Candidates should be patient focused, with a commitment to safety and quality as the driver for change and improvement. They should have experience of building strong and effective working relationships both internally and externally.

With a budget of over £99.3 m and a WTE workforce of 1650 staff, the Mental Health and Learning Disabilities Service Group is responsible for providing services for Adult Mental Health, Older Peoples' Mental Health, Substance Misuse, Forensic Psychiatry and Rehabilitation & Recovery.

Regional medium secure mental health services are provided by SBU HB on behalf of HB's in south, west and mid Wales. These services are currently based in Glanrhyd Hospital alongside low secure mental health services. It also provides Learning Disability services across three Health Boards and seven Local Authority areas.

Mental Health Services within Swansea Bay UHB are currently engaged in an extensive programme of service modernisation with an enhanced focus on community based services and reduced reliance on longer term hospital care with plans to build a new adult mental health facility on the site of Cefn Coed Hospital.

The Role:

Accountable to the Chief Operating Officer for the effective leadership and management of the Mental Health and LD Service Group, with a budget of £99m.

Working closely in a triumvirate with the Group Nurse and Medical Director to ensure quality and safety is at the core of the service group objectives.

Working collegiately with other Service Group Directors to deliver the Health Board's objectives.

  • Master's degree or equivalent experience.
  • Extensive knowledge over a range of disciplines e.g. Clinical Research, HR, Finance and Governance underpinned by specialist courses or equivalent experience. This level of knowledge would have been obtained over a significant period of senior management posts held within an NHS organisation.
  • Service Improvement qualification (Basic)

Desirable

  • Programme and project management qualifications.
  • Breadth of knowledge across all health services from primary to tertiary care.
  • Service Improvement qualification (Advanced)
  • Coaching Qualification

Experience

Essential

  • A track record of working with clinicians and multi professional teams in achieving service improvement.
  • Previous success with partners and stakeholders in delivering sensitive changes to services.
  • An understanding of working at a senior level in a large, complex organisation.
  • An ability to juggle and balance effectively the day to day operational pressures of the role with the requirement to transform and change.
  • Experience of managing large multi-disciplinary teams as well as working with staff and staff representatives.
  • oA track record in delivering financial plans and cost improvement programmes.
