We are looking to appoint a Senior Clinical Technologist / Radiographer / Healthcare Scientist (specialising in Therapeutic and Technical Nuclear Medicine) to work within the Nuclear Medicine Department at Singleton Hospital in Swansea.

The Nuclear Medicine service at Singleton Hospital has two state-of-the art SPECT-CT systems, an on-site Radiopharmacy, bone densitometry, a mobile PET-CT service, inpatient radionuclide therapy and gamma counting facilities. There are plans to develop the radionuclide therapy service on the site, adding Ra223 therapies to the service and with the aspiration of adding Lu177 therapies in the future. There are also plans for a new permanent PET-CT facility on the site. This role will be part of the scientific and technical nuclear medicine team.

The post holder will work within a highly skilled team in therapeutic and technical nuclear medicine. The post holder will provide clinical non-imaging and therapeutic Nuclear Medicine services for patients. The post holder will perform radioactivity management and radiation equipment quality control procedures and will mentor junior staff members and students in this specialist area.

Main duties of the job

The role will include delivering clinical non-imaging and therapeutic Nuclear Medicine services for patients, including radiopharmaceutical ordering, drawing-up and administration. There is also a requirement to work in radioactive waste management and equipment quality control and to support staff training and mentoring.

We are looking for an applicant with work experience in the following areas:

  • Phlebotomy and cannulation and intravenous administration of radiopharmaceuticals
  • Aseptic dispensing and administration of therapeutic radiopharmaceuticals
  • Radioactive waste management
  • Technical management
  • Radiation safety
  • Quality Control testing of radiation detection equipment
  • Standard infection control process relating to intravenous administrations

Improvement, Monitoring, Policy/Service Development

  1. Participates in the development of safe standard operating procedures for the clinical and technical aspects of radiopharmaceutical therapy and non-imaging Nuclear Medicine services
  2. Participates in the implementation of recommendations from both internal and external audits

Clinical and Technical

  1. Fulfils the role of Radiation Protection Supervisor (RPS) in accordance with the Ionising Radiations Regulations, and that of Operator in accordance with the Ionising Radiation (Medical Exposures) Regulations
  2. Performs quality control testing of specialist Nuclear Medicine radiation counting equipment, including out-of-specification reporting
  3. Performs non-imaging Nuclear Medicine studies, including taking blood samples, laboratory manipulation of samples, radioactive sample counting and results calculation
  4. Orders radioactive medicines for patients, on an individual patient basis, correcting for radioactive decay and reference dates
  5. Dispenses radiopharmaceuticals for patient use, using manual or automated shielded dispensing systems, under aseptic conditions
  6. Prepares radioactive treatment rooms for patient use and decontaminates following treatment
  7. Ensures decontamination or decay storage of radioactively contaminated items
  8. Provides guidance and information to patients relevant to their investigation
  9. Performs intravenous cannulation; practises safe disposal of sharps
  10. Administers diagnostic and therapeutic radiopharmaceuticals to patients, orally, intradermally or intravenously.

  1. Participates in management of work scheduling and rotas for the technical team
