Job summary

An exciting opportunity as arisen to join the Swansea Bay University Health Board (SBUHB) Laboratory Medicine Service which includes Point of Care Testing (POCT), as a Specialist Biomedical Scientist. The Laboratory Service is spread across the four main hospital sites within SBUHB and operates a hub and spoke network, with the hub laboratory based in Morriston Hospital and spoke laboratories at Singleton Hospital (7 miles from Morriston) and Princess of Wales Hospital in Bridgend (25 miles from Morriston). The Point of Care Testing Service also currently covers the areas and populations served by the four hospital sites i.e. Morriston Hospital, Singleton Hospital, Neath Port Talbot Hospital and the Princess of Wales Hospital. Service provision for the latter is subject to current discussions relating to a Health Board boundary change.

The Laboratory Medicine Service is progressive and extremely well equipped with Roche, Sysmex and Ortho analysers, and has full accreditation with UKAS, MHRA and IBMS training status. The POCT Service supported by Laboratory Medicine is firmly embedded within SBUHB and includes testing to monitor: blood gas, glucose, ketones, D-Dimer, INR, pregnancy testing, urinalysis, Hb, FBC, A1c. The next steps for the POCT service would be to move towards attaining accreditation of the POCT service to ISO 15189:2022 and this role would be an integral part of this process.

Main duties of the job

Your initial placement will be within the POCT service while still supporting the Laboratory Medicine Service and rotating as required.

The role within the Laboratory involves providing a comprehensive Laboratory Medicine service as an aid to effective diagnosis and treatment ensuring diagnostically abnormal results are acted upon urgently. You will also deputise for senior staff and assist in the training and supervision of junior members of the team.

The role within POCT involves support for all Health Board staff and areas that undertake point of care testing. This support involves training users, monitoring performance of external quality assurance and internal quality control and troubleshooting device and user problems.

The Laboratory Medicine Service is a 24/7/365 operation and a flexible approach to working hours is required. Once competency has been achieved you will be expected to participate in the full shift rota and expected to work at any of the networked laboratory sites as required to maintain quality, training and service requirements.

The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post; English and/or Welsh speakers are equally welcome to apply.
