Job summary

An opportunity has arisen for a 37.5 hours per week permanent position as a band 6 clinical lead/ ward sister

This post will require a keen, enthusiastic individual who wishes to pursue a career within oncology and haematology ward as a Clinical lead/ Ward sister.

The successful candidate will need to provide visible, professional nursing leadership, support, supervision and guidance (in line with NMC standards), expert clinical advice and undertake management and monitoring activities in line with legal and professional requirements statutory rules and Health Board policies relating to evidence based practice, be responsible for the efficient management of the ward in the ward manager absence.

In the absence of the Senior Charge Nurse or Deputy Charge Nurse take charge of the clinical area to ensure effective operation of the ward/department.

The post holder has responsibility and accountability for maintaining both clinical and staff governance.

The post holder as a team leader has responsibility for managing a team of nurses who are delivering Systemic Anti-Cancer Therapy (SACT).The post holder will have junior staff reporting to them (registered nurses/non-registered nurses and learners), who will also require supervision.

Main duties of the job

Practice at all times within the Nursing and Midwifery Council Code of Professional ConductDevelop the role by using evidence-based practice and continuously improve own knowledge, following

Clinical:

Responsible for the safe delivery of all aspects of SACT administration .As a nurse led unit and often without medical review the nurse has responsibility for toxicity assessment and is responsible for the assessment of care needs and the development, implementation and evaluation of care for patients to ensure delivery of a high standard of care.

Work within and monitor standards of care within the defined policies, procedures, standards and protocols of the Ward, Directorate and Division to ensure adherence to, and delivery of, a high quality service.Maintain effective communications with patients, relatives and other members of the multidisciplinary team to ensure that appropriate information is shared and patient needs are met. Organise own workload to ensure that the interests of patients/clients are met.

Participate in clinical audit and research as required.

Develop and maintain a sound knowledge base and practice relevant to the clinical setting.

About us

Cancer Services for people living within South West Wales are provided by the South West Wales Cancer Centre, based at Singleton Hospital, Swansea Bay University Health-Board, (SBUHB). Patients treated at the Cancer Centre come from the Swansea, Neath Port-Talbot areas, and Hywel Dda University Health-Board, some patients from the Bridgend area are also treated at the Centre. The area covered by the Cancer Centre includes a population of approximately 900,000 and over 3,500 patients are treated each annually with chemotherapy, radiotherapy and immunotherapy, these numbers rise every year. There are also patients that have surgery alone for their cancer but no further active treatment, this takes the number over 5,000 each year.
