Job summary
We are looking for a nurse with general medical / surgical experience who is keen to face a new challenge, motivated to learn new skills and committed to the delivery of evidence-based high quality patient care to join our small and friendly team. You will be part of an innovative service placing vascular access devices including midline catheters, peripherally inserted central catheters (PICCs) and ultrasound guided peripheral cannulas. You will also support early hospital discharge and admission avoidance for patients who are suitable for outpatient parenteral antimicrobial therapy (OPAT). A training programme will be tailored to your needs and ongoing personal development is encouraged and supported.
You must be able to prioritise your own workload and demonstrate good communication skills with the ability to liaise confidently with staff from all disciplines. You will have experience in the delivery of intravenous therapy and in the care and maintenance of both peripheral and central venous access devices.
The role is predominantly based on the Morriston Hospital site however the post holder will be required to work flexibly across the Morriston, Singleton and Neath hospital sites.

Main duties of the job
- Working as a member of the vascular access / OPAT team to ensure patients receive the 'right line at the right time' to ensure effective and timely administration of intravenous therapies. This involves the assessment, planning, insertion, evaluation and removal of vascular access devices according to evidence-based practices.
- Helping to identify suitable patients for early hospital discharge on to the OPAT service.
- Working closely with all disciplines, specialities and agencies across the organisation to ensure promotion of high standards for all patients requiring all aspects of vascular access device care and maintenance.
- Communicating complex information demonstrating an ability to share vascular access device knowledge and skills to patients, their relatives as well as the multi-professional arena. Working in an already established team you will need to demonstrate good team working skills.
- Assisting in the education, training and development of staff and assessment of clinical competencies. Computer literacy skills are required as you will need to access a variety of clinical systems relating to patient care, respond to electronic requests for information and input audit data.
- The role does involve working across the Morriston site and standing for long periods undertaking practical skills requiring a high level of precision and concentration. Whilst not essential, the ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post.
