Job summary

The Reproductive Technologist participates in the provision of laboratory services for diagnostic andrology, under the guidance of Senior Andrologist, and according to all relevant professional Codes of Conduct. The Reproductive Technologist maintains full and proper records in compliance with prevailing legislation, as well as participating in data analysis and audit.

The post holder will be expected to routinely demonstrate clinical judgement on a range of presenting clinical facts or scenarios, requiring analysis and comparison/selection of management options. Aside from formal training provision, clinical supervision and mentoring will be accessible during the normal schedule of the working day.

The post holder will also be required to use scientific/analytical skills within a role supporting audit and development activity within the service.

The post holder will work to locally and nationally agreed protocols and work closely with qualified staff and senior members of staff.

Job description

Job responsibilities

Management

1 To ensure that proper written consent is gained before any procedures are carried out.

Clinical

1 To have specialist knowledge of clinical embryology/ andrology in addition to routine healthcare science duties to diploma equivalent level

2 To use judgement in their own area of expertise such as identifying correct tests to employ and reporting problems with tests

3 To undertake full range of andrology tests including but not limited to manual and computer aided semen analysis, assessments of sperm morphology and antisperm antibodies in addition to reporting and communicating validated test results.

4 To employ good practice when handling unscreened samples and employ asceptic technique when required.

5 To plan own and less experienced staff workload with regard to lab activity and under direction of senior scientists

Professional

1 The post holder must adhere to the Association of Reproductive and Clinical Scientists Professional Code of Conduct and the Health Professionals Council Code of Conduct for Biomedical or Clinical Scientists.

2 The postholder must operate within the approved protocols, policies and standard operating procedures of the andrology service, always seeking advice/ clarification from a senior member of staff should it be required to operate outside a particular protocol or should a protocol need amending to cope with any particular undescribed event.

Service Delivery

1 To follow policies and procedures appropriate to clinical embryology/ andrology

2 To help where necessary in developing/ amending departmental policies and procedures.

3 To be responsible for the safe use of equipment by oneself and others

4 To help with maintenance of stock for the andrology service

5 To help maintain the laboratory in a fit state for practice in accordance with HFEA and ISO 15189 accreditation.

6 To participate in maintaining up-to-date laboratory protocols and laboratory QA monitoring, including EQA where appropriate.

7 To participate in service evaluation, audit and troubleshooting.

8 To participate in the audits of cryopreserved material, including gametes and embryos as part of HFEA requirements

9 To participate in on-going training in seminology techniques

Communication

1 To communicate routine information with staff and service users in a clear, empathetic manner during face to face, verbal and written communication.

2 To provide instruction to attending service users orally and in writing in an appropriate manner when taking consent, receiving samples and performing tests.

3 To accurately record own and other staff results manually and electronically (eg LIMS)

Education and Training/Staff Management

1 To supervise junior staff, provide clinical supervison and train less experienced staff.

2 To supervise and where appropriate demonstrate/ provide training to visiting clinicians and scientists in clinical andrology techniques

3 To participate in training leading to competence in seminology lab techniques

4 To participate in journal clubs organized for lab/ medical staff as part of ongoing professional development

Research and Development

1 To participate in all research projects involving the andrology service including managing the limited supplies of gametes donated for use in research projects

2 To ensure all donations into the research programmes have the appropriate consent.
