Job summary

The Laurels & Briary units are one of a range of services offered by the Learning Disability Division within Swansea Bay University Health Board and form part of the specialist inpatient services. The unit aims to provide a locally delivered comprehensive specialist health service for people with a learning disability.

The specific role of the Laurels & Briary Unit in helping to fulfil this is to offer longer term care and shorter breaks providing holistic, in-patient assessment and intervention to enhance quality of life experience and improve health outcomes.

Laurels & Briary is an 8 bedded unit based in the west of Cardiff. Laurels & Briary consists of 2 properties which can stand alone or, currently, operate as one larger unit sharing staffing and resources. The property is all ground floor with individual bedrooms.

Laurels & Briary currently offer 6 longer stay beds and 2 which offer short breaks and time limited assessment.

The post holder is responsible for the operational management of the Laurels and Briary and will promote quality for all staff and clients, leading the delivery of care in line with the values and principles of Positive Behavioural Support.

Main duties of the job

A rare opportunity has become available for the post of manager in the Laurels and Briary.

Successful applicants will provide clinical leadership and deliver on exciting service modernisation plans. Working closely with other key services the post provides specialist input to individuals with a learning disability and is responsible for the smooth running of a busy unit.

Successful applicants will have a proven track record in the management of nursing and a keen interest in service improvements.

The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post; English and/or Welsh speakers are equally welcome to apply.

Overview

People who use the services of the Laurels & Briary are adults over 18 who have a complex range of disabilities alongside their primary diagnosis of learning disability and will usually have a profound multiple disability (PMLD).

Deliver nursing care to meet the needs of clients as prescribed in care plans aligned with Fundamentals of Care

Monitor, contribute to and co-ordinate the completion of individual behavioural (functional analysis), mental health and physical assessments as agreed with the multi-disciplinary team.

Lead a team of nurses in the clinical area, in the construction of immediate care plans and contributing to the construction of Positive Behavioural Support plans as appropriate and ensure the consistent implementation of such plans.

Recognise the significance of observations and use them to develop an initial assessment, ensuring communication of and consistent application of the same.

Lead a team of nurses and ensure the effective involvement of other members of the multi-disciplinary team using effective written and verbal communication systems.

Contribute to the maintenance and improvement of services, products and systems via contributing to discussions, meetings, task teams, etc.

Manage systems to ensure the implementation, monitoring and evaluation of the clinical working model within the specialised hospital.
