Job summary

This is a unique opportunity to apply for this position as a prosthetic limb technician.

It is essential the candidate has a good manufacturing knowledge and mechanical assembly skills to improve the quality of life, mobility and functionality of amputees who haver upper and lower limb loss.

We are seeking a well-motivated, enthusiastic and creative person with an excellent hand skill set and practical ability to use tools and industrial machinery to manufacture and assemble prostheses to a set of instructions within our Prosthetic team.

The Artificial Limb & Appliance Service in Morriston Hospital is a specialised unit that provides a service for approximately 1400 active patients including armed forces veterans, children and the general public who reside in South West & Mid Wales. There are currently over 3000 prostheses which are medical devices that being currently used and require replacement and routine maintenance and repair.

It is highly recommended that you arrange an informal visit to the ALAC Unit at Morriston Hospital and also evidence your practical ability with a portfolio of photos.

Main duties of the job

To learn to provide mechanical engineering services, for example, the application of machining, fabrication, and finishing techniques and other appropriate operations using a wide variety of materials. To learn to fabricate, maintain, repair and decommission a comprehensive and specialised range of prosthetics to meet the needs of service. To assist others in the assessment of risk in relation to the development and modification of prosthetics. To co-operate in ensuring that adequate cover is given to the workshop. To follow operational procedures as laid down in the systems of work including health and safety and quality. To work with clinical staff in accordance with the systems of work. To preserve client confidentiality and handle appropriately any other confidential information. To communicate effectively, including communicating technical issues to non- technicians and dealing sensitively and tactfully with patients. Under the supervision of the team lead, or prosthetist as appropriate:

    • Where current practice permits, fit and issue specialised equipment to meet the needs of severely disabled
    • To undertake tests prior to issue of specialised equipment to meet the needs of severely disabled clients and to adapt that equipment accordingly.
