We are looking to appoint a Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon with a specialist interest in Foot and Ankle Surgery. The successful candidate will join a department that consists in total of 28 Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeons and 8 Consultant Spinal surgeons responsible for the provision of trauma and orthopaedic/spinal services to the Health Board. The candidate should be on the GMC Specialist Register, or within 6 months of obtaining this.

Main duties of the job

These posts are part of the health boards plan to expand the provision of Orthopaedic services in Neath Port Talbot Hospital. These substantive positions are newly funded to increase activity in a newly built, dedicated elective, High Volume Low complexity (HVLC) centre on the non-acute site at Neath Port Talbot hospital. Three new theatres have been built to create a 5 laminar flow and 2 day case MSK theatre block.

The consultants would perform their trauma on call and Low Volume High Complexity (LVHC) reconstructions at Morriston hospital, with the necessary back up from ITU, vascular, cardiac, plastics and renal services for complex tertiary referral work. The post holder would be expected to partake in the creation of South Wales revision networks and a specialist interest in complex revision and infected revision is desirable.

Morriston Hospital currently runs a 1:12 consultant on-call rota in which new consultants would partake. The Trauma and Orthopaedic Service at Morriston Hospital provides a comprehensive orthopaedic service to its patients and is part of the Major

Trauma Network as a Major Trauma Unit where the regional Orthoplastics service is based. This includes paediatric patients and a spinal service delivering elective activity and urgent/emergency cover in conjunction with its orthopaedic on-call teams.
