As part of our vision for the future we have created exciting acute medicine opportunities within our newly constructed £3.5m 45-bed Acute Medical Unit (AMU) based on the Morriston Hospital site. This 21st Century Acute Medical Unit is a dedicated front of house facility with an integrated trolley-based Assessment Unit and a new Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) unit. Supported by integrated diagnostics, therapies and pharmacy hubs.

The acute medical workforce is currently being expanded to meet the service redesign changes. The post holder will be expected to contribute to the running of the acute medical assessment unit, ambulatory emergency care clinics along with specialty sessions of their choice. Providing the post holder with opportunities for personal development, growth and a sense of belonging amongst the acute medical team.

The post holder will also be required to participate in the GIM on call rota (1 in 20) and will have responsibility for post on-call ward rounds. This will be a 10 session job plan (7 DCC; 3 SPA) as per the Welsh Consultant contract.

Main duties of the job

The ACP post focuses on assessing, diagnosing, and treating various medical conditions mainly on adult patients who needs urgent medical needs or are cases of emergencies. Admission rates to Medicine from the Emergency Department can be high and can vary quite significantly based on several factors. The Acute Unit operates 24/7 and is staffed by a multidisciplinary clinical team focused on acute medical care with the objective of providing early expert assessment and treatment of acute medical illnesses.

Consultants and Doctors working in Acute Medicine are responsible for the assessment, investigation, diagnosis, and management of patients who develop severe conditions quickly which also can be life-threatening. This will be a role to develop and improve the activity within acute medicine and also acute medicine within the Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC).

Specialty sessions in Diabetes/endocrine will also form part of the job plan as the Diabetes service combines to provide a Health board wide service for patients.
