Applications are invited for a Consultant Endocrinologist to join the team at Swansea Bay University Health Board. The post is a replacement post following the retirement of a colleague.

Under our "Changing for the Future" strategy, Swansea Bay University Health Board have embarked on an exciting change programme developing our three main hospitals in Swansea Bay (Morriston, Singleton and Neath Port Talbot) as 'centres of excellence' for different types of care. Morriston Hospital will become the centre of excellence for urgent and emergency care, specialist care and regional surgical services for Swansea Bay, including complex medical interventions,

As part of our vision for the future we have created exciting acute medicine opportunities within our newly constructed £3.5m 45-bed Acute Medical Unit (AMU) based on the Morriston Hospital site. This 21st Century Acute Medical Unit is a dedicated front of house facility with an integrated trolley-based Assessment Unit and a new Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) unit. Supported by integrated diagnostics, therapies, and pharmacy hubs.

This will be a 10 session job plan (7 DCC; 3 SPA) as per the Welsh Consultant contract.

Main duties of the job

This post is a replacement for the current retiring endocrinologist to join a group of 8 consultants within Diabetes and Endocrinology. The post holder would be responsible for the ongoing delivery and future development of endocrine services supported by an experienced local Endocrinologist.

The main duties and responsibilities would include:

  • Delivery of endocrinology clinics
  • Consultation and advice to medical colleagues in allied specialities
  • Attendance at regional endocrine MDT meetings
  • The ongoing development of local endocrine services
  • Supporting the inpatient care of general medical, diabetes and endocrine patients on ward S at Morriston
  • Contribution to the general medial on call

Contribute to the acute medical intake. The current rota frequency is

  • 1:16 Monday to Friday 5-8pm and next day PTWR 9am-12noon (not Saturday)
  • 1:16 Monday to Friday 5-9pm and overnight on call
  • 1:11 weekends (two consultants 8am-2pm and one consultant 2pm-8pm and overnight)

Job responsibilities

You will provide a clinical service, with colleagues, which will include the responsibility for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of illness.

You will be responsible for coordinating the Endocrinology service in Morriston Hospital including:

  • Delivery of endocrinology clinics
  • Consultation and advisory service to medical colleagues in other specialities
  • Development of a specialist area of endocrine interest is encouraged
  • Attendance at regional endocrine MDT meetings
  • Future development of local endocrine services
  • Providing inpatient care to patients admitted to ward S with general medical, diabetes and endocrine conditions
  • Supervising the on call junior medical team.
  • Working with consultant physician colleagues to develop alternatives to hospital admission such as ambulatory care, hot clinics and specialty urgent care pathways.
  • You will participate in the out of hours service delivery of acute medical take during weekdays and weekends on a rota basis.
  • Undertaking 4 subspecialty sessions. These will be agreed with individual appointee as appropriate and will be regularly reviewed in job plan meeting.
  • Examples of work programmes are included below. These will be subject to evaluation and change depending on how this new service evolves.
  • You will have continuing responsibility for the care of patients in the Emergency Department in liaison with Consultant colleagues, allowing for proper delegation to, and training of staff. The post holder, in liaison with Consultant colleagues, will have responsibility for the proper functioning of the department in line with the operational policy/Strategic Plan of the LHB.
