This is an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic candidate to join a well-established, progressive multi-disciplinary team.
The Maxillofacial Unit, which includes the specialties of Orthodontic and Restorative Dentistry has close working relationships with these departments. A wide range of Oral and Maxillofacial services are carried out including head and neck surgery, paediatric oral and maxillofacial surgery, facial deformity surgery, maxillofacial trauma, salivary gland surgery and cutaneous malignancy.
The Oral and Maxillofacial department is an integrated department based at Morriston Hospital and also serves the Princess of Wales Hospital in Bridgend. All emergency work takes place at Morriston, Inpatient elective work takes place at Morriston and Singleton Hospitals, with outpatient clinics on both Morriston and Bridgend sites.
The Maxillofacial Unit, Cleft Unit and ENT share a dedicated outpatient facility with several clinical rooms, treatment rooms and multidisciplinary meeting rooms in the new outpatient facility at Morriston Hospital. There is access to a large children's ward for paediatric patients. There is a dedicated adult and paediatric theatre for elective operating throughout the week and access to CEPOD theatre for emergency work. There is a large maxillofacial laboratory on site serving all three specialties.
You will be expected to participate in sufficient personal and professional development to fulfil Royal College and GMC/GDC requirements.
Main duties of the job
This is a replacement post joining a team of six Consultants responsible for the provision of Oral and Maxillofacial services to Swansea Bay UHB and Hywell Dda UHB initially involving general maxillofacial surgery, paediatric surgery and surgical dermatology.
You will also be expected to link into dermatological services in Swansea Bay and Hywel Dda. The Maxillofacial Unit based at Morriston Hospital, which includes the specialties of Orthodontic and Restorative Dentistry, has a close working relationship with West Wales providing an integrated maxillofacial service to this region.
The department is one of the busiest in the United Kingdom serving a population of 1.25 million. A wide range of Oral and Maxillofacial services are carried out including head and neck surgery, paediatric oral and maxillofacial surgery, facial deformity surgery, maxillofacial trauma, salivary gland surgery and cutaneous malignancy. All emergency and inpatient elective work will take place at the Morriston Hospital. All other work can be undertaken on any of the other sites.
There is a large maxillofacial laboratory on site serving all three specialties. The team includes maxillofacial technicians and prosthetists, orthodontic and restorative technicians and full-time 3D scientist. A full range of services is provided including facial prostheses, obturators, implants, orthodontic appliances and support for facial deformity, oncology and trauma service.
About us
You will be encouraged and supported to develop their sub-specialty and multidisciplinary interests. The Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery clinical team currently includes three specialist trainees, four specialty doctors and nine dental and medical foundation and core trainees. This post will offer an opportunity to contribute to trainees' education.
As well as reaching the top of the Consultant pay scale within 7 years, you will also be entitled to a commitment award every 3 years, after reaching the top of the pay scale, to a maximum of £26,672 per annum.
Currently, until 31st March 2025, Consultants appointed on the first three points of the Consultant pay scale also receive Wales' annual recruitment incentive payments.
