Job summary
This is an exciting opportunity to join the existing team responsible for the provision of general (gastrointestinal) surgical services to the Health Board.
At present there are 18 gastrointestinal surgeons at Swansea Bay University Health Board. Elective surgery is divided between Morriston and Singleton Hospitals. The emergency surgical intake occurs on the Morriston site.
Main duties of the job
You will have wide-ranging experience in benign upper GI surgery. Ideally, this would include advanced laparoscopic biliary surgery and anti-reflux surgery.You will provide a clinical service, with colleagues, which will include the responsibility for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of illness.
You will engage with the development of the service to the delivery of timely urgent surgery to include specifically the development and implementation of a pathway to deliver laparoscopic cholecystectomy within National Guidelines. To this end, the sessions starred with an asterisk will be flexible to accommodate access to theatre and outpatient facilities. The flexibility of the sessions will not reduce the SPA time, but allow for the variations in access to theatres/outpatients.
Working with consultant colleagues and the multi-professional team you will have continuing responsibility for the well-being of all patients under your care; allowing for proper delegation to, and training of staff. In partnership with clinical and managerial colleagues you will also have responsibility for the safe, efficient and effective functioning of the services in which you work in line with the values, operational policies and integrated medium term plan (IMTP) of the Health Board.
About us
Swansea provides elective and emergency general surgical services to Swansea and the Neath/Port Talbot area which amounts to a population of around 400,000. Following the COVID pandemic, services and infrastructure across the Health Board are undergoing substantial change, including surgical services. An increase in emphasis on providing elective surgery at Singleton Hospital and emergency care at Morriston Hospital will necessitate cross-site working.
