The Radiotherapy Department is part of the South West Wales Cancer Centre. The department currently has a fleet of 4 Linear Accelerators, 1 CT Sim. 3 of our Linacs have SGRT with a fourth new Linac with SGRT due to come online summer 2023. We cover a large geographical area and offer many areas of advanced practice.
We are currently looking to recruit a Consultant Radiographer and welcome applications as follows:
- Fully qualified Consultant Radiographer (Band 8B)
In order to be considered for the fully qualified post candidates must have successfully completed the qualifications (as stipulated in the person specification) and training entitlement in all areas of the pathway signed off by the IRMER Lead at the department entitlements were issued. (Evidence will be required).
- Trainee Consultant Radiographer (Band 8B - Annex 21)
Candidates who do not poses the full essential criteria of the fully qualified Consultant Radiographer will be considered for appointment under Annex 21.

Main duties of the job
- Provide a comprehensive Therapeutic Radiographer Consultant service for patients requiring radiotherapy.
- Be an integral part of the MDT, participating in the development of standards and guidelines related to practice of radiotherapy and ensuring the highest possible care for their group of patients
- Practice at an expert advanced level, providing expert care for patients undergoing radiotherapy for cancer, improving service delivery to patients whilst optimising the use of existing resources and developing services.
- Plan the delivery of radiotherapy treatment, which includes, outlining tumour volumes and surrounding organs at risk and prescribe within protocol.
- Responsible for the review of this group of patients, both on treatment and in the OP clinic setting.
- Ensuring a patient centred service and close liaison with Consultant Clinical Oncologist, medical staff, radiographers and nursing staff, both within the immediate environment and externally.
- Lead the education and training of other healthcare professionals in relation to the radiotherapy treatment of the cancer site and the management of its consequences/side effects.
- According to current legislation, IR(ME)R 2017, undertake independent or dependent prescribing or administration of medication within Trust protocols.
- Lead by example, encouraging and promoting cross-professional working across the division.

Staff employed in Radiotherapy within the South West Wales Cancer Centre have the opportunity to work within a department that has had recent significant investment.
This has given the department 4 matched Linear Accelerators, 3 of which have SGRT with a 4th coming on line summer 2023. We have a CTSIM with Sentinel, and a number of advanced practice opportunities.
We work closely with our colleagues in Radiotherapy Physics and our medical colleagues with regular MDT input.
Consultant Radiographer
Will have achieved either appropriate qualifications or in house training in all areas of the pathway and will be required to have been signed off as entitled by the IRMER lead in all areas.

The Consultant Therapy Radiographer will be a key member of the tumour site specialist multidisciplinary team, providing a seamless pathway for patients receiving radiotherapy, acting as an autonomous, expert practitioner with responsibility for assessing, treating and following up their own caseload of patients. They will act as an expert resource and senior clinical lead advising other specialist services within the region. The post holder will operate at a higher level of practice consistent with standards outlined by the Society and College of radiographers (SCoR) AND THE Health care Professional Council (HCPC) and in accordance with local and national policies.
The Consultant Therapeutic Radiographer will provide leadership and consultancy as well as develop and implement best practice within specialisation in higher levels of the oncology service. They are responsible for enabling Clinical Oncology services to further develop by providing expert practice, leadership and education. They will enhance practice and research capability, providing professional clinical leadership to regional, national and international multidisciplinary research programmes.
Within the area of specialism, the post holder will contribute to the educational and professional development of all disciplines of staff including doctors in the delivery of educational programmes delivered by the organisation and outside providers as appropriate. The post holder will provide post - graduate education within their specialism and where applicable, work with education institutions to develop and deliver pre and post education programmes.
