Job summary

This is a full time fixed term post for 12 months (but LTFT applicants will be considered), suitable for a haematology registrar on the Haematology training programme at ST3 level or above, looking to further their experience in management, quality improvement and service redesign.

The role provides 40-50% protected time to help develop and implement SBUHB recovery and sustainability plans focusing on service improvement and redesign aspects pertinent to the creation of a haematology/oncology centre of excellence, including addressing workforce and sustainability challenges. 60-50% time in post will be in clinical haematology, contributing to the middle grade/trainee SpR service delivery.

In addition, as a Chief registrar, the candidate will benefit from access to a bespoke development programme provided by the RCP, which runs from September 2022 to June 2023 and comprises five 2-day modules that chief registrars are expected to attend.

The candidate would have support to apply for the post to be counted towards training time and appropriate study and professional leave to ensure curriculum requirements are met.

Innovation and research - This will involve researching service delivery models in place in other specialist units in the UK and internationally, defining data required to inform and support recommendations, generating business cases to justify development costs for staffing and capital support and applying quality improvement principles to deliver a centre of excellence. They would be invited to be members of the key clinical re-design groups relevant to the project.

This role will allow for unique opportunity for research and development in other centres of excellence focusing on haematology and oncology models of care understanding what we can learn from the models that would allow this innovation to thrive within SBU.

This post would be another senior voice for Haematology and Oncology in supporting the Singleton Site in building its Cancer Centre of excellence.

This post is an exciting opportunity for a trainee to further their management and leadership experience and be part of shaping the future of haematology and non-surgical oncology services in SB. The candidate will be supported by enthusiastic clinical and management teams and will help prepare them for a consultant post.

About us

Singleton Hospital site overlooks Swansea Bay and currently serves the Swansea area for acute medicine, care of the elderly, some elective surgical procedures, Women and Child health, Cancer services for South West Wales, and Haematology including Bone Marrow Transplant and Haemophilia. The site is adjacent to the Singleton campus of Swansea University and approximately 8 miles from Morriston Hospital. It has approximately 335 beds with outpatient facilities including Haematology, Obstetrics, Gynaecology, General Medicine, Care of the Elderly, Ophthalmology, Dermatology in addition to the Cancer centre and the Sub-regional Radiotherapy department for West Wales. It is closely linked to Swansea University, both geographically and academically and fully supports delivery of the 4 year Graduate Entry Medical Programme.
