ADVERT FOR A LAPAROSCOPIC FELLOW
We have exciting opportunities for a Laparoscopic Colorectal Fellow.
At present there are 14 gastrointestinal surgeons serving Swansea Bay University Health Board. The majority of these surgeons have sessions in both Morriston and Singleton Hospitals. The emergency intake takes place on the Morriston site. The majority of elective colorectal surgery takes place at a new 'cold-site' facility at Singleton Hospital, with high complexity surgery taking place at Morriston.
Main duties of the job
Swansea Bay Health Board provides elective and emergency general surgical services to Swansea and the Neath/Port Talbot area which amounts to a population of around 400,000.
The General Surgery unit provides local and regional services.
General Surgery Services at ABM University Health Board are provided for the local populations of Swansea, Neath, Port Talbot; and tertiary services are provided to the wider population of Mid and South West Wales (population 1,000,000).
The Department of General Surgery is led by a Clinical Director supported by two Clinical Leads, Head of Nursing and General Managers. The Department forms part of the Integrated Surgical Services Group, which includes Pancreatic, Bariatric, Oesophageal, Colorectal, Endocrine, Vascular, Urology and Head and Neck Services.

Job responsibilities
You will provide a clinical service in conjunction with your colleagues under the direction of a Consultant Surgeon, which will include the responsibility for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of illness. This post will provide advance laparoscopic colorectal skills along with other regular colorectal procedures. There is additional experience with gynae-oncology ovarian cancer cyto- reductive surgery and gynae pelvic oncology operating each week at Morriston.
You will be required to contribute to the general surgical inpatients, day cases and out patients, with an appropriate level of consultant supervision according to your level of experience.
You will be expected to be able to undertake simple and routine general surgical procedures independently.
You will be expected to work within existing clinical guidelines in the directorate.
You will be expected to deputise for absent colleagues and in exceptional unforeseen circumstances may have to perform additional duties to ensure the safe running of the department. Where such duties take place outside your normal contracted duties, you will receive either an equivalent off duty period or will be remunerated appropriately.
You will be required to participate in the Health Boards risk management process and in clinical audit and other clinical governance activities within the department, the directorate and the Health Board. Adherence to Caldicot Principles is mandatory.
You will be required to participate in the Health Boards Appraisal Scheme in conjunction with your Supervising Consultant, to identify training and development needs. You will be expected to participate in personal and professional development to fulfil royal College CME requirements.
You will provide advice to clinicians in hospital and primary care, originating either from telephone calls or ward referrals.
You will be responsible for undertaking the administrative duties associated with the care of patients and the administration of the department.
You will be required to participate and contribute to Clinical Audit in line with the Health Boards policy and to undertake continuing medical education in line with recommendations for the Royal College of Surgeons.
The Ionising Radiation (Medical Exposure) Regulations 2000 impose a legal responsibility on Health Boards for all staff who refer patients for medical radiation exposure such as diagnostic x-rays to supply sufficient
