Job summary

Applications are invited for the post of Clinical Research Fellow in Diabetes based at Singleton Hospital in Swansea with an honorary contract with Swansea University. The post will commence on the 5th of September 2022 for a period of 2 years.

There will be no fixed in-patient or outpatient commitments and the post allows protected time for research. There is flexibility to allow up to 2 clinical sessions per week. The Clinical Research Fellow will be invited to undertake a research project surrounding the current interests of the Diabetes Research Group at Swansea University.

Main duties of the job

There will be no fixed in-patient or outpatient commitments and the post allows protected time for research. There is flexibility to allow up to 2 clinical sessions per week. Some of those clinical sessions will be providing medical cover for Singleton Hospital when the acute medical redesign service is complete.

The Clinical Research Fellow will be invited to undertake a research project surrounding the current areas of Diabetes Research (see Information for Researchers (diabeteswales.org.uk) or non-alcoholic liver disease and diabetes/ metabolic syndrome project in collaboration with Hepatologists based in Swansea Bay UHB.

Proposed project (s)

  • Liver complications of Diabetes: The prevalence and screening of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) in people with type 2 diabetes.
  • Prediabetes and complications.
  • Physiological effects of exercise in type 1 and type 2 diabetes.
  • Work place based health prevention.
  • Diabetes Retinopathy.
  • Any other diabetes related research of interest.

The applicant will also be expected to participate as a local sub-investigator in international phase 2 and 3 clinical trials relating to new treatments in development for diabetes and non-alcoholic liver disease.

The whole process will be subjected to a careful academic evaluation and supervision undertaken by Prof Jeff Stephens and Dr Thinzar Min and Dr Chin Lye Ch'ng, Consultant Hepatologist (as external supervisor).

The Department of Diabetes and Endocrinology provides a hospital based community diabetes service. The local catchment population (for Morriston Hospital, Singleton Hospital and Neath Port Talbot Hospital) is approximately 390,000. The department also manages patients with other endocrine disorders from across South-West Wales. Hospital diabetes services are based across Diabetes Centre on the Singleton, Morriston and Neath Port Talbot sites. The diabetes team is multidisciplinary in nature. At the Singleton site, there are 2 consultants (1 academic), 2 SpRs, diabetes specialist nurses and dietician with support from secretaries. Ward inpatient cover is provided by 2 Foundation Year 1 trainees, 1 Academic Foundation Year 2 trainee and 1 IMT. At the Morriston site there are: 4 consultants (1 academic), 1 SpR, diabetes specialist nurses and dietician. It has approximately 335 beds with outpatient facilities including Obstetrics, Gynaecology, General Medicine, Care of the Elderly, Ophthalmology, Dermatology in addition the Sub-regional Radiotherapy department for West Wales, together with the administrative headquarters of the Cancer Centre. It is closely linked to Swansea University, both geographically and academically.
