Job summary
We have an exciting opportunity for a consultant post, responsible for the provision of general surgery with an interest in upper-gastrointestinal and bariatric surgery within Swansea Bay University Health Board.
At present there are 17 general surgeons serving Swansea site in Swansea Bay University Health Board. The majority of these surgeons have sessions in both Morriston and Singleton Hospitals but all major surgery and emergency intake occur on the Morriston site.
General Surgery Services at Swansea University Health Board are provided for the local populations (over 500,000 residents) of Swansea, Neath, Port Talbot, Bridgend, and South Powys; and tertiary services, including Bariatrics, are provided to the wider population of Mid and South West Wales (population 1,000,000).
The Department of Upper GI Surgery forms part of the Surgical Directorate, which includes Colorectal, Pancreatic, Bariatric, Oesophageal, Endocrine, Vascular and Urology Surgery. The Directorate is led by a Clinical Director supported by a Clinical Lead, General Manager and a Head of Nursing.
We have close links with Swansea University and other University College partners in South Wales especially in the areas of research and development and multi-professional teaching.

Main duties of the job
You will provide a clinical service, with colleagues, which will include the responsibility for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of illness.
Working with consultant colleagues and the multi-professional team you will have continuing responsibility for the well-being of all patients under your care; allowing for proper delegation to, and training of staff. In partnership with clinical and managerial colleagues you will also have responsibility for the safe, efficient and effective functioning of the services in which you work in line with the values, operational policies and integrated medium term plan (IMTP) of the Health Board. You are encouraged to consider how services can be improved and to report any concerns about safety.
You will participate in the 1 in 14 on call rota at the Morriston Hospital, with prospective cover. In exceptional circumstances it may also be necessary to undertake duties at other locations with the Health Board. Travelling as necessary between hospitals/clinic will be required to undertake such duties. Travel expenses will be remunerated according to the Health Board policy and procedures for claiming.

Swansea provides elective and emergency general surgical services to Swansea and the Neath/Port Talbot area which amounts to a population of around 400,000.
The well-established colorectal unit has a National reputation providing local and regional services.
Swansea is the sub-regional pancreatic surgical service, which undertakes pancreatic resection for the whole of South Wales and takes referrals of complex pancreatitis patients.
Swansea has the only accredited NHS bariatric centre in the whole of Wales.

You will engage with the development of the service to the delivery of timely urgent surgery to include specifically the development and implementation of a pathway to deliver laparoscopic cholecystectomy within National Guidelines. To this end, the sessions starred with an asterisk will be flexible to accommodate access to theatre and outpatient facilities. The flexibility of the sessions will not reduce the SPA time, but allow for the variations in access to theatres/outpatients.
Swansea is the national centre for bariatric surgery. You would be encouraged to develop expertise and experience in bariatric surgery and hiatal surgery. Experience in advanced endoscopy, including therapeutic endoscopy and ERCP, would be desirable.
