Job summary

This is an exciting opportunity for a dynamic clinical psychologist, who is a good team player, and who feels passionately about delivering psychological care within a child physical health setting. The post is to lead the psychology service within the Welsh Centre for Cleft Lip & Palate, working with babies, children and young people born with a cleft, and their families as well as some adult patients.

Main duties of the job

Key duties within this role include:

To lead a team of Qualified and Assistant Psychologists to deliver, evaluate and develop the cleft psychology service. There is opportunity to work in a preventative way, promoting psychological adjustment and resilience, to work in a more traditional way supporting people with psychological difficulties, and to support children and families through their treatment journey, often from birth to their early 20s.

As a senior member of the cleft team, working collaboratively with other specialty leads and the MDT to develop the service with an ethos of always improving, and to ensure developments and pathways are psychologically informed.

To ensure systems are in place for clinical and information governance within the cleft psychology service and to be responsible for the recruitment, management and supervision of the psychologists within the cleft team and more broadly when appropriate.

To proactively engage with the national cleft network and contribute to local, regional and national audit and research.

To be an active member of the group of psychologists working with children in the Health Board and to work collaboratively with other psychologists in WHSSC funded surgical services.

Adults born with a cleft can also access the service. The service is a specialist surgical service and the MDT comprises of specialist nurses, psychologists, surgeons, speech and language therapists, paediatricians, dentists, and orthodontists.The service is based in Morriston Hospital but some regular clinics are held in University Hospital Wales in Cardiff.

Psychology is an established and valued part of the cleft team. The team works closely together in a multi-disciplinary way and has won multiple awards for multi-disciplinary projects. Having the opportunity to work with all babies and children born with a cleft enables the psychologists to work in a wide range of ways including preventative work promoting resilience and adjustment, alongside the more traditional therapeutic work with children and families experiencing psychological difficulties.
