Applications are invited for the post of Consultant Colorectal Surgeon to join the General Surgery department at Swansea Bay University Hospital
At present there are 17 general surgeons serving Swansea site in Swansea Bay University Health Board. The majority of these surgeons have sessions in both Morriston and Singleton Hospitals but all major surgery and emergency intake occur on the Morriston site.
The well-established colorectal unit has a national reputation providing local and regional services.
General Surgery Services at Swansea University Health Board are provided for the local populations (over 500,000 residents) of Swansea, Neath, Port Talbot, Bridgend, and South Powys; and tertiary services are provided to the wider population of Mid and South West Wales (population 1,000,000).
The Department of Lower GI Surgery forms part of the Surgical Directorate, which includes Colorectal, Pancreatic, Bariatric, Oesophageal, Endocrine, Vascular and Urology Surgery. The Directorate is led by a Clinical Director supported by a Clinical Lead, General Manager and a Head of Nursing.
We have close links with Swansea University and other University College partners in South Wales especially in the areas of research and development and multi-professional teaching.

Main duties of the job
This is an exciting opportunity to join the existing team of 18 Consultants responsible for the provision of general (gastrointestinal) surgical services to the Health Board.
At present there are 18 gastrointestinal surgeons at Swansea Bay University Health Board. Elective surgery is divided between Morriston and Singleton Hospitals. The emergency surgical intake occurs on the Morriston site.
Swansea provides elective and emergency general surgical services to Swansea and the Neath/Port Talbot area which amounts to a population of around 400,000. Following the COVID pandemic, services and infrastructure across the Health Board are undergoing substantial change, including surgical services. An increase in emphasis on providing elective surgery at Singleton Hospital and emergency care at Morriston Hospital will necessitate cross-site working.
The colorectal unit has a national reputation providing local and regional services in all aspects of colorectal surgery, with specific expertise in advanced pelvic malignancy, complex abdominal wall reconstruction and inflammatory bowel disease. Also within the general surgery department at Swansea, is the sub-regional pancreatic service and the only accredited NHS bariatric centre in South Wales. These tertiary services are provided to a regional population of 1 million.

Working with consultant colleagues and the multi-professional team you will have continuing responsibility for the well-being of all patients under your care; allowing for proper delegation to, and training of staff. In partnership with clinical and managerial colleagues you will also have responsibility for the safe, efficient and effective functioning of the services in which you work in line with the values, operational policies and integrated medium term plan (IMTP) of the Health Board. You are encouraged to consider how services can be improved and to report any concerns about safety.
You will be required to adhere to the principles of good medical practice as laid down by the General Medical Council.
You will be required to participate in the Health Boards risk management process, clinical governance and any other healthcare governance activities within the department, the delivery unit and the Health Board. Adherence to the Caldicott Principles of information governance is mandatory.
You will be required to maintain a licence to practice through revalidation, to undergo satisfactory annual appraisal using the all Wales online Medical Appraisal Scheme (MARS) and to formulate a Personal Development Plan, in conjunction with the Clinical lead, to identify training and development needs. You will be expected to participate in sufficient personal and professional development to fulfill Royal College and GMC requirements. You will also be required to undergo a job plan review at least annually and to agree and then meet service outcomes.
You will be expected to make a significant contribution to the service and delivery unit planning process through active participation in the clinical delivery unit structure. It is an exciting time within the Health Board as we undergo significant change as part of recovery and redesign of elective and emergency services. There are specific opportunities for modernisation of advanced laparoscopic colorectal surgery in the new elective centre, and development of robotic colorectal surgery.
You will participate in the on call rota at Morriston Hospital, with prospective cover. It may also be necessary to undertake emergency duties at other locations with the Health Board including out of hours cover for elective inpatients at Singleton Hospital. Travelling as necessary between hospitals/clinic will be required to undertake such duties. Travel expenses will be remunerated according to the Health Board policy and procedures for claiming.
You will adhere to all policies which cover radiation exposures as currently outlined in IRMER regulations.
The Health Board is committed to meet its obligations to minimize infection. You will be required to comply with current procedures for the control of infection, including dress-code, to challenge non-compliance by colleagues, and to attend training in infection control provided by the Health Board.
