Job summary

The Clinical Education Fellowships offer an exciting opportunity to work and develop within the Faculty of Medical Education in Cwm Taf Morgannwg UHB across our three acute units, Princess of Wales Hospital, Royal Glamorgan Hospital and Prince Charles Hospital. Successful candidates will join a motivated, enthusiastic faculty in the delivery of undergraduate education for students primarily from Cardiff University Medical School. The posts are for one year from 5th Aug 2026 and would suit CTs/STs wishing to develop as clinical teachers. These posts are primarily for educational development however, successful candidates have the opportunity to gain clinical experience within a chosen specialty for one day of the week (subject to specialty availability). Our educational fellows are required to undertake study for the PGCE/Diploma in Medical Education at Cardiff University and are encouraged to develop research projects during their tenure.

Please note - these roles are only available to those that have previously held a renumerated NHS position. If there is no evidence of paid NHS experience, the application will be immediately discounted.

THIS POST IS FIXED TERM FOR UP TO 12 MONTHS TO MEET SERVICE NEEDS.

These are the current applicable pay scales; however, these may change upon implementation of the framework agreement for reform to the terms and conditions of service for resident doctors and dentists in Wales. Further details can be found at BMA+-+Framework+Agreement+Wales.

Main duties of the job

The successful applicants will be an integral part of the undergraduate medical education team and will be responsible for the local organisation and delivery of the C21 curriculum to our medical students. There are many other opportunities within these roles including training as a medical examiner, question writing and standard setting. Fellows are required to undertake study for a PGCE/Diploma in Medical Education and develop research projects.

Job description

Job responsibilities

i) Management- The successful applicants will be integral in the management of undergraduate education within the UHB and will be involved with planning undergraduate training and allocation of resources.

ii) Clinical/Professional- Although these are primarily educational posts the successful applicants will have the opportunity to maintain or develop clinical experience in the specialty of their choice (subject to local availability).

iii) Service Delivery- Clinical experience is supported in any available specialty supernumerary to service delivery.

iv) Leadership- Fellows will be expected to develop, support and lead a junior faculty to support the delivery of undergraduate teaching.

v) Communication- Fellows are required to work closely with Undergraduate Lead and Honorary Senior Lecturers and participate in meetings with the University for planning and implementation of the C21 curriculum. In addition, they will be required to build and maintain relationships with medical education staff, as well as working with the other Clinical Fellows across the UHB.

vi) Education and training/Staff Management- Fellows will coordinate and lead a team of junior doctors in delivering certain components of the undergraduate curriculum.

vii) Information Resources- the Medical Education Department is undergoing a major ICT infrastructure upgrade to align with both current and more contemporary approaches to teaching and learning. Appropriate resources will be made available to support the successful applicants.

viii) Finance- These posts are funded by SIFT money designated to support undergraduate education and training. Successful applicants will be funded in their study for PGCE/Diploma.

ix) Research & Development- Fellows will be expected to develop and undertake a research project during their tenure.

You will be expected to deputise for absent colleagues and in exceptional, unforeseen circumstances may have to perform additional duties to ensure the safe running of the department. Where such duties take place outside your normal contracted duties, you will receive either an equivalent off duty period or will be remunerated appropriately.

You will be required to participate in risk management, clinical audit and other clinical governance activities required by the department, locality and Health Board. Adherence to Caldicot Principles is mandatory.

You will have an Educational Supervisor with whom you should meet regularly for personal development and training. Formal progress review/appraisal is required every three months. You will be expected to participate in personal and professional development to fulfil Royal College CME requirements.
