Applications are invited for a General Surgery Consultant Surgeon with a Colorectal Sub Specialty.

The successful candidate will join the existing General Surgical Department at Royal Glamorgan Hospital. The post will have a flexible session programme with a general surgical emergency 'on call' commitment 1 in 8.

This post will join the team of Consultants responsible for the provision of general surgical services to Cwm Taf Morgannwg, University Health Board. The post will be based at Royal Glamorgan Hospital in Llantristant, but may also be required to undertake sessions across other sites within the organisation.

Additional elective clinical work may occur at either Prince Charles Hospital (PCH) in Merthyr Tydfil or the Princess of Wales Hospital (POWH), Bridgend. The Department of General Surgery is part of the Planned Care Directorate and is based across three sites: Prince Charles Hospital in Merthyr Tydfil, Royal Glamorgan Hospital in Llantrisant and Princess of Wales Hospital in Bridgend. Consultants will not be required to work across more than two hospitals.

The post will be required to share the responsibility of providing General Surgical outpatient and inpatient care for the local population and in doing so foster excellent working relationships within and outside the General Surgical Department.

Main duties of the job

o Work with the rest of the consultant body to provide strong professional leadership within the department and deliver a high-quality service following clear departmental policies and guidelines.

o Provide professional and managerial supervision of junior medical staff.

o Follow UpToDate evidence-based practice for patients under their care to deliver safe and robust surgical management: allowing for proper delegation to, and training of staff, to ensure that concise agreed management plans are clearly documented in the medical notes of all patients.

o Undertake ward rounds to identify and assess problems, plan management of care, and be actively available during the working week so that medical and nursing staff can communicate and consult freely.

o Ensure that an appropriate model of care is adopted which recognises the involvement of the multi-disciplinary team, the holistic needs of the patient and their family.

o Ensure that the use of medical and nursing resources within the department are utilised to the maximum potential.

o Assist the multi-disciplinary team in the production of referenced, evidence-based guidelines which are dated, signed and reviewed annually or more frequently in light of new evidence.

o Develop and maintain good communication with clinical colleagues across the Health Board regarding the treatment of their patients and the appropriate use of the department's resources.

  • MBChB/MBBS or equivalent
  • FRCS or equivalent
  • At time of interview, the candidate must be: On the specialist register Or be within 6 months of the CCT / CESR (CT) date if progress has been satisfactory and it is anticipated that the outcome of the final ARCP will recommend that training will be completed by the time the recommend CCT / CESR (CT) date is reached Or have a primary medical qualification and a recognised specialist qualification from an EEA country or Switzerland which will allow directed entry onto the Specialist Register
