Job summary

These are newly created Specialist Doctor posts developed as part of the Medical Workforce productivity programme.

Specialist doctors are senior and experienced clinicians who will work autonomously to a level of defined competencies, as agreed within local clinical governance frameworks. Specialists will be responsible for patients in their areas of practice as an 'expert decision maker'.

Specialist doctors provide expertise in a specialised area, whether delivering care in a specific specialty or in a generalist service and will manage the full range of presentations in their area of practice. The role will primarily focus on providing direct clinical care, meeting service delivery and improvement requirements. However, the role will be supported by suitable development opportunities including management roles and leadership responsibilities in teaching, academia research and service development. The details of the balance between clinical care and other elements of the role would be discussed during the job planning process.

This post is fixed term for up to 9 months due to limited funding.

Main duties of the job

The postholder will be responsible for the general care of patients on the Intensive Care Unit at Prince Charles Hospital, and provide clinical support for critically ill in-patients and within the Emergency Department.

The Critical Care service has Tier 3 Intensive Care Units at the the Princess of Wales Hospital, Prince Charles Hospital and the Royal Glamorgan Hospital. The postholder will be expected to undertake clinical sessions at all locations, if necessary.

Person Specification

Knowledge, personal skills, and abilities

Essential

  • MBChB/MBBS or equivalent
  • Post-graduate diploma in Critical Care (e.g. FFICM, EDIC)

Desirable

  • MRCS/MRCP FRCA
  • MSc or MD

Education/ Qualifications and training

  • Full registration and a Licence to Practice with the General Medical Council

Experience

  • Shall have completed a minimum of 12 years' medical work (either continuous period or in aggregate) since obtaining a primary medical qualification of which a minimum of 6 years should have been in a relevant specialty in the Specialty Doctor and/or closed SAS grades.
  • Equivalent years' experience in a relevant specialty from other medical grades including from overseas will also be accepted.

  • Evidence of personal involvement in management and administrative roles in Health Care
