Job summary

To provide support to registered and qualified staff/patients during the peri operative journey. See main duties.

The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post; English and/or Welsh speakers are equally welcome to apply.

Main duties of the job

  • Communicate with a range of patients with differing needs, including overcoming any barriers to understanding such as deafness / language difficulties.
  • Provide support/reassurance to patients referring any essential information/ questions/concerns to registered professionals.
  • Communicate with other health professionals to perform delegated duties to ensure a safe service.
  • Participate in Patient Safety steps for example briefs, time out, debriefs.
  • Pass information to other healthcare staff to ensure patient safety and continuity of care.
  • Undertake induction and competency-based programmes to perform delegated supervised duties.
  • Complete statutory and mandatory training.
  • Follow policies/procedures/ guidelines/protocols/safe systems of work.
  • Only working within delegated duties under supervision of registered staff / following schedules of work.
  • Alerting registered staff to any missing or incomplete documentation/ relevant patient safety information when performing patient checks.
  • Identifying whether items are sterile /disinfected and reporting compliance to standards.
  • Performing in conjunction with registered staff swab, needle, instrument and item counts alerting registered staff of any inconsistencies.
  • Report to registered staff deviations or trends from baseline basic physiological monitoring of patients.
  • Reporting faulty equipment and any alert hazard alarms on equipment to registered staff.
  • Instigate basic resuscitation after sending for help.
  • Follow schedules of work.

Job description

Job responsibilities

  • Perform initial safety checks and preparation of equipment
  • Ensure clinical areas/equipment cleaned and items restocked in areas
  • Select items and surgical trays for an operating list on instruction of registered staff
  • Provide patient care following agreed procedures /on instruction of registered staff.
  • Safe processing/labelling of specimens following agreed procedures.
  • Work under supervision of registered staff performing acceptable delegated duties consistent with training and level of responsibility of role.

  • Switching on/off and the attachment and detachment of equipment
  • Moving and transporting patients/equipment.
  • Assist in the positioning of patients/equipment.
  • Assist with assembling and de-assembly of equipment following training.

  • Provide delegated/instructed/prescribed care to patients following set procedures under the supervision/delegation of registered staff.

  • Maintain stock levels.
  • Only use equipment trained to do so and exercise care when moving/handling equipment.
  • Occasionally ensure patient possessions kept safe following Local Health Board Policy.
  • Act as a buddy for new staff during induction.
  • Participate in PADR process identifying own personal development to perform role.
  • Following training, provide support as a trainer/coach for mandatory training consistent with role.
  • Entering patient data and completion of patient documentation within confines of role.
  • Processing patient information in line with data protection/ information governance/ confidentiality.
  • Assist in collection of data to assist with clinical trials and service development/efficiency.
