An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Locum Consultant Surgeon Post with a Benign Upper GI Sub Specialty Interest.
The successful candidate will join the existing General Surgical Department at Prince Charles Hospital. The post will have a general surgical emergency 'on call' commitment on a 1 in 8 basis.
This post will join the team of Consultants responsible for the provision of general surgical services to Cwm Taf Morgannwg, University Health Board. The post will be based at Prince Charles Hospital in Merthyr Tydfil, but may also be required to undertake sessions across other sites within the organisation.
The University Health Board has a track record of supporting non training grade doctors in obtaining their CESR and this could be discussed further with the consultant contact names displayed with this advert, either before application or at interview stage. The post will be required to share the responsibility of providing General Surgical outpatient and inpatient care for the local population and in doing so foster excellent working relationships within and outside the General Surgical Department.

Main duties of the job
This post will join the team of consultants responsible for the provision of General Surgical services to the University Health Board in Cwm Taf Morgannwg. The consultant will be based at Prince Charles Hospital in Merthyr Tydfil, but may be required to travel to other sites across the organisation.
The post will be required to share with consultant colleagues in the responsibility of providing outpatient and inpatient services for the local population and in doing so, foster excellent working relationships within and outside the General Surgical department, including medical, nursing, secretarial and support staff, General Practitioners and management teams.
The post will also work with the Clinical Services Group Management team to: assist in the strategic planning and modernisation of General Surgical services, deliver internal and external targets for patient activity and achieve financial balance.
The post will be part of the consultant on call rota on a 1:8 basis with a 10-session job plan with enhanced payment for the on call commitment.
The successful applicant will be expected to cover a week on call as part of the emergency surgeon role.

- Provide professional and managerial supervision of junior medical staff o Continuing responsibility for the care of patients under his/her care: allowing for proper delegation to, and training of staff, ensuring that concise agreed management plans are clearly displayed in the notes of patients with complex conditions.
- Undertake ward rounds to identify and assess problems, plan management of care, and be actively available during the working week so that medical and nursing staff can communicate and consult freely.
- Ensure that an appropriate model of care is adopted which recognises the involvement of the multi-disciplinary team, the patient and family.
- Ensure that the use of medical and nursing resources within the department are utilised to the maximum potential.
- Assist the multi-disciplinary team in the production of referenced, evidence based guidelines which are dated, signed and reviewed at least bi-annually or more frequently in light of new evidence.
- Work with the rest of the consultant team to provide strong professional leadership within the department and be mentored in the delivery of a high quality service provided by well-trained staff within clear departmental policies and procedures.
- Develop and maintain good communication with clinical colleagues across the Health Board regarding the treatment of their patients and the appropriate use of the departments resources.
o Be required to participate in the Health Board Risk Management process and in Clinical Audit and other clinical governance activities within the department, the directorate and the Health Board. The post holder will be positively encouraged to participate in continued professional research and development in line with Health Board, Commissioner and NHS priorities.
- Revalidation will be required to maintain full GMC registration and revalidation should follow the GMC code of Good Medical Practice. o In liaison with consultant colleagues, have responsibility for the proper functioning of the department in line with the operational policy and strategic plan of the Health Board.
- Work to ensure that services within the department fulfil contractual performance indicators and work closely with directorate colleagues in identifying problem areas and planning and implementing appropriate solutions
- The post holder will be required to participate in the on call rota.
