Job summary

A vacancy has arisen in the Health Board for a Consultant Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon based in Prince Charles Hospital, Merthyr Tydfil. The successful candidate would complement a department of 6 Dental Core Trainees, 1 Specialty Trainee, 6 Associate Specialists/Specialty Doctors and 8 consultants. The department provides Oral & Maxillofacial surgery, Restorative Dentistry & Orthodontic Dentistry for the Cwm Taf Morgannwg & Powys catchment area.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will provide with clinical colleagues (as appropriate) a service in the speciality to the hospitals within the UHB, with responsibility for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of illness.

The post holder will have continuing responsibility for the care of patients under his/her care, allowing for proper delegation to, and training of staff. The post holder, in liaison with consultant colleagues will have responsibility for the proper functioning of the department in line with the Operational policy and strategic plan (as amended from time to time) of the UHB.

The post holder will be required to participate in the UHB's risk management process and in Clinical Audit and other clinical governance activities within the department, the directorate and the UHB. The post holder will be positively encouraged to participate in research and development in line with UHB and NHS priorities.

The post holder will be expected to formulate a personal development plan in conjunction with the Clinical Director to identify training and development needs.

The post holder will be expected to make a significant contribution to the directorate business planning process through active participation in the clinical directorate structure.

Travelling as necessary between hospitals/ clinics will be required to undertaking such duties.

Requirement for continuing professional development.

A study leave allowance of 30 days over a 3-year period is supported at the relevant rate.

Education/Qualifiactions/Training

Essential

  • Full registration with the United Kingdom General Dental Council (GDC) and the General Medical Council (GMC).
  • Must be on the GMC Specialist Register in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery or within 6 months of date of CCT.
  • Fellowship in Dental Surgery or Membership of the Faculty of Dental Surgery, or equivalent.
  • Fellowship or Membership of the Royal College of Surgeons, or equivalent
  • Intercollegiate Fellowship Examination in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery or equivalent.
  • Successful completion of an SAC-approved 5 year minimum training programme in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, or within 3 months of completion
  • Current holders of an NHS or honorary NHS consultant contract in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery are eligible to be shortlisted
  • Applicants who are Nationals from another European country or elsewhere overseas would have to show equivalence to the 5 year training period in the National Health Service required for the specialty
  • Experience of postgraduate and Undergraduate teaching.
  • Training in teaching.
