Job summary

A exciting opportunity has arisen to join the Optometry Department at Ysbyty Cwm Rhondda, Cwm Taf Morgannwg UHB.

As an Ophthalmic Technician you will work closely with Ophthalmology doctors, Orthoptics, Optometrists, Technicians and with the wider multi-disciplinary team to provide visual fields and ophthalmic diagnostics for patients attending the eye department. You will provide vital clinical information needed for the doctors to make a diagnosis and a correct treatment plan for patients' eye conditions. You will need to have good communication skills, good time management, prioritisation skills and have a flexible approach to work. Experience in working in a clinical environment would be an advantage.

You will be working directly with patients, undertaking visual field tests and auxiliary ophthalmic diagnostics, including imaging and visual acuity tests, following competency-based training. This role includes dealing directly with patient enquiries. Consequently you will need to have great communication skills, be computer literate, able to juggle your own time and be able to support the work of the team across different hospital.

The successful candidate will be able to understand the key contribution that visual fields add to the ophthalmological investigation of patients presenting with eye conditions. You will receive full training and be expected to take an active role in your continuous personal development.

Main duties of the job

To work as part of the Optometry team to undertake visual field, diagnostic ophthalmic imaging and visual acuity testing and also administrative tasks, responding flexibly to the needs of the service.

Support the Optometry staff by assisting with some modalities of optometric interventions.

Participate in project work, audits and provision of relevant statistics which may be for the benefit of patients or the Optometry department.

Monitor stocks of equipment and ensure appropriate supplies are ordered.

The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post; Welsh and/or English speakers are equally welcome to apply.
