Job summary

Applications are invited to join the Medical Directorate at Royal Glamorgan Hospital. Applicants must have full registration with GMC.

The successful applicant will be expected to be responsible for Care of the Elderly patients - in Rehabilitation & Acute Ward. This is a replacement post in the Care of the Elderly Department.

The Royal Glamorgan Hospital is the base hospital for the southern half of Cwm Taf Health Board. It is a District General Hospital, commissioned in November 1999, serving a population of approximately 185,000 in the Rhondda Taf Ely locality.

There are strong links with the academic unit at the University Of Wales College Of Medicine. Undergraduate students are attached to the Department of Medicine throughout the year. The successful applicant will be expected to be involved in both undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and will be encouraged to undertake research and audit.

Main duties of the job

The job is mainly based in Royal Glamorgan Hospital, which is an acute general hospital. The successful candidate will be one of the three registrar grade doctors (2 Speciality Registrars [St4-7] and one SAS doctor) responsible for looking after COTE patients in the Royal Glamorgan Hospital. The team is supervised by five Care of the Elderly Consultants. There will be opportunity to undertake outpatient clinics with support from Consultants. These can also include patients referred to the General Medicine outpatient service and includes patients from 16 years upwards.

It is expected that the post holder would work alongside and provide supervision and advice for Trainee Doctors, Advanced Nurse Practitioners and Physician Associates, and work with the extended Multi-Disciplinary Team. The candidate should be comfortable in determining when offering advice is reasonable or when to review patients in person after they have been seen by other members of the clinical team.

You will be required to participate in the Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Boards risk management process and in clinical audit and other clinical governance activities within the department, the Clinical Service Group and Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board. Adherence to Caldicot Principles is mandatory. The post holder will be positively encouraged to participate in research and development in line with Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Boards Commissioner and NHS priorities.

Teaching

The COTE Department has a high clinical teaching workload in both postgraduate and undergraduate spheres which the post holder would be expected to contribute towards. There is a weekly departmental meeting for education and at least one student teaching session per week.

Opportunity exists for further developing education and teaching skills at the clinical skills centre at the Royal Glamorgan hospital.

Audit

There is a monthly audit and governance session. Attendance is expected for senior and junior staff. This has resulted in high quality audit and review within the Clinical Service Group. The Successful candidate will be expected to take part in the department audit activities.

Continuous Professional Development

There are weekly speciality meetings, weekly Medical Departmental meetings, and monthly hospital Grand rounds at which attendance is expected.
