Job summary

This post of Consultant Ophthalmologist with a sub-specialist interest in Glaucoma in the Royal Glamorgan Hospital, Llantrisant has arisen because of the recognition that the number of patients at risk of irreversible sight loss from glaucoma in the local population is steadily increasing, making it desirable to increase provision for their management.

The main clinical duties are based at the Royal Glamorgan Hospital, Llantrisant. The job plan may include outpatient clinics, duties at other hospital sites within the Locality and virtual clinics.

The successful candidate will be one of seven consultants supported by 6 specialty doctors, 2 specialist ophthalmic trainees (STs), one in year 1-2 and one in years 4-5, 4orthoptists, 4 optometrist, 3 technicians and an ECLO. There is a well-established in-house glaucoma ODTC run by specialist orthoptists and assisted by technicians and an optometrist. Laser rooms house argon/YAG/SLT equipment.

The ophthalmology Unit has dedicated ophthalmic theatres within the Royal Glamorgan, Prince Charles and Princess of Wales Hospital with ceiling-mounted Leica microscopes.

Main duties of the job

The on-call element of the role will be on a 1:6 basis.

A wide range of general expertise in Ophthalmology is a requirement and a special interest in glaucoma is essential.

Excellent communication skills are required to support a multidisciplinary team approach to services.

Cwm Taf Morgannwg was formally established on 1st April 2019.

In total, CTM UHB employs over 7,600 staff across three District General Hospital sites - Prince Charles Hospital which opened in 1978, the Princess of Wales Hospital opened in 1985 and Royal Glamorgan Hospital, which opened in 1999, and six smaller community hospitals.

Population Served by the CTMUHB

CTMUHB currently provides services to around a 474 000 population. The UHB primarily serves the residents of Merthyr Tydfil, Rhondda Cynon Taff and Bridgend as well as residents of North Cardiff, parts of the Rhymney Valley, the Ogmore valley and, South Powys, and other adjacent health communities. In addition, the UHB provides some specialist services to the catchment areas of Bridgend and Caerphilly.
