Job summary
During these times of great upheaval and change, the Community Dental Service (CDS) of Cwm Taf Morgannwg UHB has a great, new and exciting opportunity; one that will help to secure the much needed dental care for some of the most vulnerable patients in our communities. Our aging population demographics, where many people are living longer, but not always in good health, means that securing high quality care is essential if we are to contribute to improving quality of life, by helping to address the often neglected dental needs.
Our new post, for a full-time, permanent adult special care specialist (Band C) will be at the vanguard of all we do for these patients, helping to shape and develop the service over the coming years. We are looking for an individual with plenty of drive and vision, to go along with their obviously much needed clinical skills, someone who will have the opportunity to really make a tangible difference to the population served by our Health Board.
This post is based in Keir Hardie Health Park but also providing dental care across the Cwm Taf Morgannwg localities.
The successful applicant will join a dynamic team providing the full range of community dentistry working alongside other dentists, orthodontists and a dental therapist.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will provide specialist dental care to special care patients with conditions including learning disabilities, physical impairments including obesity, mental health problems, substance abuse, medically-compromising conditions, social problems including homelessness and severe anxiety or phobias.
A driving licence is essential as there may be occasions when the post holder will be required to work in other fixed clinics, on the mobile dental units, or provide domiciliary care.
The CDS is one of the largest salaried services in the UK with approximately 80 staff providing a diverse range of treatment to a widely dispersed population within CTM. Dental care is provided from 11 fixed clinics and a number of mobile dental units. The Directorate serves the valley communities in Merthyr Tydfil, Rhondda Cynon Taf and Bridgend areas.
The range of treatment provided includes sedation, special care dentistry, paediatrics, General Anaesthesia, Access, domiciliary visits and orthodontics. The clinics are involved in the outreach training of final year undergraduates and the clinical supervision of Year 2 and 3 dentists on the Dental Core Training schemes. The CDS also runs the Welsh Government oral health improvement initiatives, Designed to Smile and Gwen Am Byth, and epidemiology surveys in these areas.
For informal enquiries please contact James Gillespie, CDS Associate Clinical Director on 01685 351000
English and/or Welsh speakers are equally welcome to apply
