Job summary
We are looking to appoint a substantive consultant breast surgeon with an interest in breast screening. The post holder will join a dynamic team of surgical colleagues in the breast care unit at Prince Phillip Hospital. This is a health board wide post with sessions at Prince Philip Hospital (Llanelli) and Withybush General Hospital (Haverfordwest) with screening and symptomatic responsibilities. A flexible approach to the needs of service is essential.
The post holder will deliver a quality breast service, working closely with colleagues from radiology and oncology.
This post comes during a period of Health Board-wide service reviews, including a comprehensive reconfiguration of services for General Surgery in West Wales.
Main duties of the job
To ensure the provision and delivery of a first-class clinical breast service to the population with a responsibility for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of breast disease.
To share the responsibility for the management of patients with breast disease
To provide services to both symptomatic and screen detected patients
To support the development and delivery of a subspecialty service in hospital and in the community
To provide effective leadership to all staff engaged in the specialty
To sustain and develop teaching and research wherever appropriate
To work as part of a multidisciplinary team
To provide leaderships for and participate with the development of postgraduate training for F1s, F2s, CTs, STs, SpRs, Speciality Doctors and other staff as appropriate.
The post holder will have core clinical expertise in breast disease diagnostics and management, experience and knowledge of running a subspecialty service and operate on patients with screen detected breast cancers. The post holder is expected to maintain their professional development for revalidation and promote evidence based clinical practice through audits.

The successful candidate for this Consultant post will be eligible to hold an Honorary Academic title at a partner university on the understanding that they will participate in undergraduate teaching, including acting as an examiner, and support and facilitate research activities in an appropriate university faculty and school. They will take direction in these activities via the appropriate academic lead. The agreement to define the Honorary Academic responsibilities and associated programmed activities in relation to teaching time and research will be negotiated jointly between the post holder, the university and the Health Board. It will form part of the successful candidates job plan. The award of the Honorary Academic contract will be dependent upon a formal application being submitted to the university in accordance with the Honorary Appointments procedures and will be available on a fixed term basis subject to satisfactory performance in the academic activity undertaken.
