Job summary

The Gastroenterology Department is going through an exciting transition currently and the new appointee will be key to this development. The areas of interest that will be developed include hepatology, alcohol liaison service, nutrition, advanced endoscopy, bowel screening and IBD.

With the 4 gastroenterologists in post, working cross-site, subspecialty interests will be encouraged to enhance the service. Future aspirations will be to look towards a Hywel Dda Gastroenterology Service.

The anticipated number of outpatients is 5-8 new patients or 12-24 follow-up patients or a combination thereof for each outpatient session, depending on support staff.

There is an expectation that the successful candidate participates on the Acute GI Bleed rota on a 1:8 basis.

The X-ray department has full CT, MRI, ultrasound and angiographic facilities including a day ward area for the admission and recovery of angiography patients. Cardioversions and pacing are carried out in a dedicated room on the cardiac care unit.

To provide, with consultant colleagues (as appropriate) a gastroenterology service and supporting the development of sub-speciality interest to the hospitals and community with responsibility for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of illness.

Main duties of the job

It is anticipated that the appointment of a sixth gastroenterology physician into the Carmarthenshire team will allow subspecialisation and concentration of expertise within the County.

The post will be based at the Glangwili site. It is anticipated the successful applicant would have a broad ability in general gastroenterology to join 5 colleagues in Carmarthenshire. An interest in either Bowel Screening Endoscopy and advanced lower GI therapy or an interest in ERCP and hepatology would be warmly welcomed.

Bowel Screening Wales expansion through national optimisation is creating a large demand for screening endoscopists currently and over the next 3 years.

We have a hepatology service which is flourishing and growing. The service needs additional senior medical input to guide specialist hepatology nurses. ERCP experience would be highly desirable to enable succession planning of current services that includes 2 ERCP lists.

Most of these sessions will be delivered at Glangwili hospital but future growth of lists may require travel to Prince Phillip or Bronglais Hospitals, depending on specialist interest.

An interest in advanced colonoscopy, hepatology and ERCP will be nurtured and mentored with the existing team to develop skills and confidence.
