Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a motivated, adaptable Band 3 Therapy Assistant to join the friendly Speech and Language Therapy Team, based at Glangwili General Hospital.

You will be working with a friendly group of Speech & Language Therapists to support the delivery of the clinical service to outpatients and wards. The role will include supporting the Speech and Language Therapists (SLT) in performing tasks such as: gaining patient histories, preparing assessment materials, administration and documentation, patient mealtime observations, supporting patients to carry out and monitor therapy programmes as set by the SLTs.

Ideally you will have previous experience of working in a therapy or healthcare setting. We are looking for someone who is enthusiastic, organised and flexible to the needs of the service with excellent communication skills to join our productive team.

To carry out a range of speech and language therapy activities independently as directedby the SLT, and/or Band 4 SLT support worker, with adult patients with a range of communication and / or swallowingdifficulties.

You will be required to travel throughout the county of Carmarthenshire and also travel to the other counties of Hywel Dda as service demands.

Main duties of the job

To complete screening assessments of communication skills assessments for acute stroke. To carry out prescribed interventions, based upon aims determined by the SLT. To advise and demonstrate input to carers to assist in improving the communication and / or swallowing environment of the patient, as agreed with the therapist, and/or Band 4 SLT support worker. To develop and use alternative / augmentative communication systems and communication aids with patients, as agreed with the therapist, and/or Band 4 SLT support worker. To prepare and develop intervention materials for use with individual patients or groups as directed by the SLT, and/or Band 4 SLT support worker, using manual and IT skills. To assist the therapist, and/or Band 4 SLT support worker, with specific tasks e.g. recording notes during an assessment, completing assessment under direction, making specific observations and recording to assist in the planning of intervention. To support adult service 'link' representative (Band 4 SLT support worker) in liaison with Hywel Dda SLT service communication aid specialist and Rookwood Communication Aid Centre, Cardiff.
